Our Learner Success Services Department is looking for an Academic Aide to complement their team.
Responsibilities will include:
Act as a reader, scribe or a note taker for an assigned learner with a disability
Assists learners who have difficulties producing written materials in class by taking notes from lectures and presentations.
Works with learners to ensure instructions are well understood.
Assists with writing answers to exam questions exactly as dictated by the learner.
Provides non-tutoring support services during class or after class to complete assignments.
Establishes appropriate responses to learner-initiated interactions; demonstrates good judgment and knowledge on when to escalate or refer learner to other resources.
Promotes an atmosphere of respect for adult learners.
Utilizes current technologies the learner needs or wants to use.
Attends Academic Aide meetings when required to gain and share information.
Act as an invigilator for accommodated testing
Invigilates computer-based and paper-based testing for learners with test accommodations.
Maintains test security.
Logs-on students to password protected computer-based tests.
Collects completed tests and returns tests to appropriate College personnel.
Interacts professionally with BVC learners.
Interacts professionally with BVC staff and faculty.
Deals appropriately with difficult situations and people (i.e., a student caught cheating).
Alternative Format/Material Preparation Support
Prepares alternate format materials for use with assistive technology.
Assists learners by preparing and assembling materials to complete academic projects.
Checks formatted materials for quality and accuracy.
Ensures materials are formatted and distributed in a time
Job Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
Diploma in a related field
2 years of related experience
Ability to work independently applying critical thinking skills and problem solving
Able to read, speak and write English fluently
Ability to produce clear, legible and succinct notes from lectures
An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered
Preferred Qualifications
Training or experience in working with persons with disabilities is preferred
Knowledge of disability related barriers faced by adult learners
Demonstrated organizational skills and initiative
Knowledge of adaptive technology is an asset
Ability to demonstrate appropriate responses to learner-initiated interactions
Ability to utilize current technologies required by the learner
Knowledge of Microsoft Word
Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills appropriate for working with adult learners
This is a casual, AUPE position.
Please note that all successful candidates will be required to provide government issued identification and proof of educational qualifications upon hire and may be required to provide an enhanced police information check.
