Academic Writing Specialist – COC

Reporting to the University Librarian or designate, the Academic Writing Specialist provides student-centred support that helps students build skills and confidence by empowering their development as writers. In the classroom, the Academic Writing Specialist facilitates engaging and interactive learning experiences; in one-on-one meetings with students, the Academic Writing Specialist provides supportive, specific individual instruction, both in-person and within the distributed learning environment, that engages students fully in the experience. The Academic Writing Specialist also develops and maintains online learning tools with a focus on developing materials in formats alternative to print to provide equivalent access to information for students who are studying in on-campus and distributed programs. The Academic Writing Specialist initiates, establishes, and maintains positive working relationships with RRU program faculty and staff to promote communication about the Writing Centre’s services and to ensure customized writing instruction meets the needs of students. This position will also be involved in the project management of publication activities lead by the Library unit.

Job Requirements

  • Completed Master’s degree in an appropriate field of study and at least two years formal teaching, teaching assistant, or learning support experience working with students in a post-secondary environment
  • Able to meet demands of a highly-scheduled environment to ensure equity of access
  • Uses independent problem-solving skills to provide information and solutions that consider the end user’s needs and expectations
  • Comfortably manages conversations with highly stressed and/or emotional participants
  • Balances providing student-centred service that exceeds students’ expectations with maintaining service boundaries
  • Provides informative, specific, and constructive written feedback on student writing to help students develop new understanding and skills
  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the typical components of writing (e.g., parts of speech, grammar, punctuation, capitalization), academic writing (e.g., essay/paragraph structure), the writing process, and style guides (e.g., APA Style)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects and meet deadlines
  • Experience in publishing, including editing and online software management, strongly preferred
  • Strong computer skills (MS Office suite, web editors, publishing software)

Additional Information
This is a casual on-call position with varying day, evening, and weekend shifts and we cannot guarantee a set number of hours per week. The hourly rate is $30.78. Due to its limited-term nature, this position is not eligible for enrolment in the University’s Benefits Plan, but you will be provided with 4% in lieu of vacation.
