Analytical Chemist

Primary Purpose: To maintain existing, and develop new, protocols on gas and ion chromatographic mass spectrometry systems.

Nature of Work: Reporting to a lab manager and professor, the incumbent will be responsible for all analytical chemistry work conducted in our soil science laboratory. The laboratory is an inclusive, team environment. This position supports numerous research projects, and the incumbent will work both independently and in collaboration with other technicians, and graduate and undergraduate students. The work is also part of an Industrial Research Chair grant, thus allowing the incumbent to contribute to both academic and industrial goals. Attention to detail, drive, willingness to learn, and a positive attitude are necessary to ensure success in the position.

Typical Duties or Accountabilities:
Maintain established protocols and develop new analytical protocols on gas and ion chromatographic mass spectrometry systems.

Teach undergraduates and graduate students in the operation and interpretation of GC/MS and IC/MS data.

Support the laboratory’s radiochemistry work, with a focus on the development of 11C-radiosynthesis techniques.

Maintain and enhance supportive and professional culture in the laboratory.

Other duties as assigned.

Education: MSc in Chemistry, with 2 years industrial experience, preferred; or a PhD in chemistry. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Experience: Research (through graduate degree or industrial work) experience with advanced targeted mass spectrometry or radiochemistry. Experience working in a busy laboratory environment is required. Instructing or mentoring in an educational institution will be considered an asset.

Skills: Experience with gas and ion chromatography; experience with running a GC/MS and IC/MS; experience with processing analytical chemistry data; ability to work with Excel; experience using R or phyton is considered an asset; ability to work independently; comfortable working in a diverse training environment; excellent interpersonal skills; willingness to learn new skills; ability to take initiative and be self-directed; demonstrated skills in project and database management an asset.
