Job Description

Job Summary:
Sugar Cane Archaeology, a division of Sugar Cane Development Corporation (“SCDC”), is seeking an Archaeological Field Director/Supervisor to be based out of our office in downtown Williams Lake.

Sugar Cane Archaeology is a rapidly growing professional services provider that is currently staffed by several archaeologists, project managers, health and safety professionals and 15-20 seasonal field crew.

The Archaeological Field Director will have experience supervising and directing field crews in conducting archaeology or heritage resource management work including pedestrian survey, shovel testing and archaeological excavation, under a Heritage Conservation Act Permit, or otherwise.

In addition to the above, the Archaeological Field Director may be required to assist with other Natural Resource Management or environmental stewardship duties as directed by the Board of SCDC.

Duties:
Identify and record areas of archeological potential, archaeological sites, and traditional use sites

Collect data and complete data management

Lead preliminary field reconnaissance surveys, and archaeological impact assessments

Carry out archaeological monitoring

Write permit applications, interim reports, final reports, and proposals

Engage with clients and assist with business development

Assist with Crown referrals and other natural resource management duties assigned by the Board of SCDC

Your Capabilities and Credentials:
Field Director status in the Interior Plateau preferred

Experience working with First Nations cultural heritage management teams

Minimum BSc in Archaeology or BA in Anthropology with a major in archaeology

Minimum 3 years experience in Cultural Resource Management in BC

Minimum 3 years experience identifying traditional use sites & features, CMTs, and lithic artifacts

Experience with lithic artifact analysis and cataloging, identification of traditional use sites & features, mapping, pedestrian surveys, subsurface testing, excavation, data collection (field notes, photographs, digital information)

A valid class 5 driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract is required

OFA level 1, WHIMS, S100, RISC, H2S, UTV/ATV, Chainsaw, Snowmobile, Bear Aware, Confined Space preferred, but will train

Desire to work closely (in both leadership and supporting roles) with other environmental professionals and First Nations

Excellent writing and communications skills

Dedicated to following and promoting a strong health, safety and environment (HSE) culture

Able to work independently and lead crews in challenging field conditions.
