Position Title: Arts Programmer
Position Status: Full-time (30 hours per week)
Start Date: May 15, 2021
Overview:
Hornby Island is a remote and rural community of approximately 1200 residents in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia; it may have the highest per-capita density of artists in all of Canada.
The Arts Council has begun building a new Arts Centre and is in a period of profound transition and growth. The Arts Programmer will maintain and deliver current programming activities and commitments, help develop the organizational systems (financial, HR, IT, communications) needed to transition into the new Arts Centre, and deliver and oversee significantly increased programming upon opening. The Arts Centre will be open five to seven days a week, all year long, to the general public. This is a very exciting opportunity for the right candidate with considerable responsibility and opportunity for growth.
The Arts Centre will be first and foremost a space that is grounded in community and that serves local residents all year. The Arts Centre will also be a space for building friendship and relations with regional communities in the Comox Valley including in particular the K’omoks First Nation, whose unceded territories include Hornby Island.
Role:
- Coordinate programming: a range of disciplines—from professional arts to community and amateur arts, from visual to mixed media arts, performing to digital arts, literary to recording arts, including evolving disciplines and fields.
- Organize events: organize people, scheduling, minute taking, agenda setting, facilitation, as well as activities such as fundraisers and auctions.
- Curatorial support: From months-long installations to weeks-long art sales to one-off performance events.
- Development: Educational programming, workshops and talks, residencies, festivals, conferences, and more.
- Leadership: direct and mentor youth and summer workers.
- Teamwork: work closely with the Executive Director, the Board, other staff, as well as volunteers.

Core Skills:
- Facility with technology and applications: GSuite, Adobe, 365, Website Management, Database Management, Zoom, Slack.
- Research and presentation capacity.
- Strong administrative capacity.
- Project management.
- Complete fluency with the English language, both written and spoken.
Additional Desirable Experience with:
- Facility and retail management.
- Gallery and/or museum installations.
- Stage management and/or recording arts.
- Graphic design.
- Fundraising and grant writing.
- Community organizing and campaigns.
- Start-ups.
Education / Experience:
- Post-secondary preferably in arts management, NGO, non-profit work, or equivalent.

Compensation: $40,000 to $57,000 per year depending on experience and qualifications.
