The Assistant Fire Chief – Public Safety is responsible for the Public Safety Division (inspections, investigations, plans examination, and public education), reporting directly to the Fire Chief. This is a senior administrative and leadership position responsible for proactively planning, organizing, coordinating and directing all public safety initiatives, and related emergency services and programs. As the Fire Services technical lead on BC Fire and Building Code interpretation, you will provide in-house expertise for the department on building development proposals as well as ongoing projects.

In this role, you will contribute to the continuous development and improvement of the District of North Vancouver Fire & Rescue Services and display good judgement and initiative on administrative and technical matters, problem solving and decisions. You are a forward thinking, visionary leader who is results oriented, adaptable, capable of implementing progressive ideas and concepts, and able to operate in a participatory environment that encourages and recognizes the contribution of staff. You demonstrate a genuine concern and interest for the well being and professional development of staff in an environment that encourages personnel to perform at a high level, while providing effective and efficient services for the benefit of the community.

You have experience as an officer as well as sound knowledge and understanding of fire prevention, inspection and investigation methods and procedures, Fire & Rescue Services’ administrative functions, budget preparation, report writing, program development, effective labour management relations, and strategic planning. You have considerable experience in plans examination, building technology, building protection engineering, and the application of local building bylaws and the BC Fire and Building Codes. You also have highly developed human relations skills and a strong customer service orientation, with the ability to communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing) at all senior organizational levels and with elected officials, the media and the public. You are familiar with all applicable Provincial Statues, industry standards and District of North Vancouver Bylaws.
