The Associate Dean, Community and Continuing Education (CCE) provides day to day operational management of Community and Continuing Education program areas in consultation with the Dean, CCE and, as appropriate, the Regional Principals. The Associate Dean ensures that CCE’s strategic plan is translated and brought to life in the day to day operations of the CCE Department, program areas and within the overall mission and goals of the College of New Caledonia. Connecting CCE courses, training activities, and program areas to the department’s strategic plan, the Associate Dean’s role is primarily internal facing. The Associate Dean works closely with coordinators, faculty, and staff to translate the department’s strategic initiatives into operational plans to be implemented in the department.

The Associate Dean, CCE works consultatively with the Dean, CCE in the strategic planning process, formulating and implementing the vision for the department. As directed, the Associate Dean, CCE may be assigned to special projects and may be asked to represent the Dean on internal councils and in external facing activities. Through consultation with the Dean, the Associate Dean, CCE, is primarily responsible for the effective management of CCE programs, courses and other training activities assigned within the department’s responsibilities. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, planning, organizing, staffing, and managing resources for Community & Continuing Education courses, programs and other training activities. The Associate Dean provides a perspective and analysis of academic and educational requirements for Community and Continuing Education courses, programs and other training activities to the Dean of Community and Continuing Education.

NATURE & SCOPE:
Operating on a fully cost recovery basis, the Community & Continuing Education Department offers continuing education credit and non-credit courses and programs as well as contract and customized training services. The department is responsible for an annual cost-recovery budget of approximately $4 million and consists of approximately 50 full-time and part-time faculty and 12 full-time and part-time operational staff.

As an educational administrator, the Associate Dean, Community and Continuing Education reports to the Dean, Community and Continuing Education and has associated responsibilities for the management, guidance, and direction of programs and courses within the department, including the Post-Diploma in Human Resources Management, Post-Diploma in Tourism and Hotel Management, Post Diploma in Information Technology, Nursing Unit Assistant Certificate, Bookkeeping Certificate, Medical Device Reprocessing Associate Certificate, and Medical Office Assistant Associate Certificate programs and a wide variety of course offerings. In addition, the department offers contract and customized training services. The Associate Dean will be primarily responsible for the day-to-day operational management of these programs, courses and services.

Specific Duties

The Associate Dean, Community and Continuing Education provides management of identified program areas, and in consultation with the Dean and Regional Principals (where required), provides leadership in the program areas which is consistent with the department of Community and Continuing Education’s strategic plans and the overall mission and goals of the College. The Associate Dean, Community and Continuing Education is involved in the following functions:

Contributes to the overall leadership of CNC by anticipating, recommending, and contributing to the development of educational policies and long-term planning

Promotes and encourages educational approaches within an inclusive and indigenized, internationalized environment

Establishes, monitors, and participates on various institutional committees

Engages both key college wide initiatives and relevant community consultation initiatives in collaboration with the Dean of Community and Continuing Education

Facilitates the regular evaluation of faculty employees and operational staff

Facilitates and supports professional development activities for faculty employees and operational staff

Chairs departmental committees as delegated by the Dean of Community and Continuing Education

Participates in the orientation of new faculty employees

Identifies new program opportunities and assists with the development of new programs and services within the department

Works in consultation with Dean and the C&CE team regarding effective fiscal management, ensuring cost recovery outcomes

Participates in the development of Community and Continuing Education’s plans and goals consistent with the Educational Plan and CNC Strategic Plan

Assists with the administration of collective agreements for staff and faculty within the department of Community and Continuing Education;

Meets with students to resolve issues, and when delegated by the Dean of Community & Continuing Education, assesses student appeals and complaints

Identifies new policy directions and assists in the evaluation and implementation of current policies

Represents the Dean of School of Community and Continuing Education when requested

Liaise with external partners for day to day program management of Community and Continuing Education programs, courses, and services

Performs other related duties as assigned

Skills & Qualifications

The successful candidate will have:

  • an undergraduate degree and a relevant Master’s degree;
  • a minimum of three years’ teaching and/or curriculum or program development experience in a public post-secondary institution, including experience within a continuing education department,

and a minimum of two years’ relevant community or post-secondary management/administration

experience. An equivalent combination of teaching, curriculum or program development, and management/administrative experience will be considered;

  • As an educational administrator, the Associate Dean must be a dynamic leader and have management philosophies, educational qualifications, and instructional experiences that inspire

confidence and motivate others. The Associate Dean must be sensitive to the needs of partners and colleagues and recognize that the needs of the learners are paramount.

  • The Associate Dean is part of a team that is actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College while supporting the aspirations and

needs of our learners and communities. The Associate Dean promotes a positive work atmosphere and a professional environment that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues.

  • Demonstrated success in budget development and management; experience working in cost-recovery educational units with responsibility for financial returns preferred;
  • Demonstrated success working with employers, community and organizational partners to develop, design and deliver educational programming;
  • Experience in and understanding of instruction, educational needs and planning, particularly relating to responsiveness to communities and evolving social, economic and labour market needs;
  • Demonstrated success in constructing proposals and negotiating and managing contracts;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, organizational skills and interpersonal skills;
  • Articulated knowledge of adult and community education philosophy and practices;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate, solve problems, and analyze situations in a professional and collegial manner to achieve immediate and long-range outcomes;
  • Demonstrated ability to use evidence-based decision making and excellent judgement when balancing competing demands;
  • Experience with and an understanding of Aboriginal and international education in a community college context;
  • Experience implementing educational programming and skills training based on learner needs, institutional priorities, and labour market and government developments.
