Reporting to the Director, Public Affairs and Communications (PAC), and assigned tasks by the Editor in Chief, the Associate Editor is responsible for the accuracy, style and presentation of written materials created by CCSA and ensures that documents and reports are coherent and consistent with CCSA’s goals and standards.
Responsibilities
Assist in writing and editing communications products for broad audiences, including annual reports, updates to partners, reports in short, highlight reports and press releases
Apply plain-language principles to communications products for specialized audiences
Write and edit web text for new publications and new sections of the CCSA website
Provide editorial services for all CCSA materials, including editing, proofreading and formatting
Ensure coherence, consistency and standardization of CCSA’s corporate identity for all written communications, including publications, PowerPoint presentations, promotional material and web pages
Work with project leads, as necessary, to resolve any issues of clarity or meaning in their documents
Work with translator/reviser, as necessary, to resolve questions about English-language texts
Recommend appropriate terminology in all written documents with a sensitivity to audience and to issues of stigma, sex and gender
Update, maintain and promote use of the CCSA writing style guide, including preferred terminology lists
Collaborate with other members of the Public Affairs and Communications team and other divisions to determine appropriate content and requirements for publications with a broad audience
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree, equivalent or higher in a discipline with language as a main focus (English literature, journalism, communications, writing, etc.)
Minimum of five years’ experience editing publications with an NGO or similar organization in the healthcare field
Experience working with standard writing and presentation guidelines, including the APA Publication Manual, the Canadian Press Stylebook and Caps and Spelling
Demonstrated ability to produce clear, error-free English text
Familiarity with the digital publishing process from manuscript submission through to publication
Expert ability in Microsoft Word and familiarity with other Microsoft 365 products
Experience working with subject-matter experts and applying plain-language principles to improve the readability of scientific and academic reports
Good communication skills
Ability to communicate with other divisions to anticipate and manage workflow
Assets
Ability to understand, express and apply complex concepts in the substance use and addiction field
Bilingualism English/French (spoken)
