Business Manager, Labour Relations
This senior labour relations position, managing a small Union office in West Vancouver, requires both competency in the Collective Agreement (CA) negotiation process as well as the administration and enforcement of CA’s.
The position also requires knowledge in researching and interpreting labour law decisions as well as experience in the full range of labour relations as they relate to WorkSafe, BC Human Rights, Respectful Workplace Policy legislation, Conflict Resolution, BC Labour Relations Code and other Acts or regulations proclaimed by Provincial or Federal governments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Direct and supervise staff in the day-to-day operations of the office
- Monitor and oversee financial transactions including payroll, invoices, bills and tracking of the organization’s budget and finances, and advise the Treasurer and Executive.
- Assist the Association Executive Board in establishing and maintaining an effective organization guided by the Association’s (Union) Constitution and By-laws.
- Advise, assist, and represent Association members in dealing with complaints, grievances, investigations, other disputes, and interpretations of Collective Agreement clauses.
- Advise, assist, and guide bargaining unit groups in the formation and preparation of collective agreement proposals and strategies when entering the collective bargaining process.
- Take the role of lead negotiator/spokesperson when negotiating any of the Associations’ four (4) separate bargaining unit agreements. Attend committee meetings, meetings with employers, and outside groups.
- Review a wide variety of professional periodicals to monitor and keep current on current labour issues and law.
- Attend various work site locations. Perform any other related work as required.
Requirements:
- Senior school graduation accompanied by labour relations courses or equivalent on-the-job experience.
- Minimum five years’ experience in a union-oriented labour relations environment preferred
- Considerable understanding and knowledge regarding the principles, practices and objectives of Union representation work and must meet the philosophical objectives of the Union movement.
- Sound knowledge of finance and financial planning.
- Ability to exercise considerable independence and discretion in the performance of duties and in meeting with employers, members, or outside groups.
- Ability to deal tactfully, efficiently, and effectively (orally and in writing) with the employers, members, other unions, and outside groups.
- Ability to function effectively under pressure, speak publicly and meet deadlines.
- Ability to research, compile and prepare reports on a variety of labour-related subjects.
- Thorough knowledge of office methods and procedures to carry out effective office management.
- Sound knowledge of computers and various software including Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel as well as the internet in the performance of the duties in this role.
- Proven staff management experience would be strongly preferred
- Must have valid BC driver’s license.
- Must complete an acceptable police information check
- Microsoft Access database knowledge/experience an asset
