The Green Line LRT (the Program) has been planned for Calgary’s future since the 1980s. On January 30, 2019, total funding commitments of $5.54 billion from all three levels of government were secured for Stage 1 of the Green Line LRT ($4.903 billion for capital and $640 million for The City’s financing costs). The Program is the largest infrastructure project in Calgary’s history and will play a key role in shaping our city’s future. The Green Line will kick-start our economy with 20,000 jobs. Connect people and places. And reduce congestion on our roads. The Program is a long-term investment in the growth and development of our city. High quality transit, like LRT, is a necessity for cities to grow, be attractive to entrepreneurs and a talented workforce, and to be competitive economic centres locally and internationally. Green Line will help build the Calgary of tomorrow.

The Program will touch numerous communities and areas, each with unique identities, and diverse area planning needs. The public engagement process strives to accommodate and respect the individuality of each community while facilitating meaningful dialogue to gather the necessary design information. In most cases, public input is one of many factors that must be considered by the program team when making decisions. Other factors include cost, community impact, environmental considerations, and technical feasibility.
