Overview

The Cement Industrial Director provides direction and strategic planning for multiple cement plants in Canada and is responsible for leading and overseeing the execution of all activities to achieve the short, medium and long-term financial and operating objectives set by the overall organization business plan.

This position may be located in Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto or Montreal.

Responsibilities

Health and Safety

Responsible to drive world-class H&S performance, including exemplary housekeeping, robust adherence to standards and ensuring a strong positive H&S culture

Ensures alignment of H&S activities arising from H&S missions and objectives.

Actively manages risks by ensuring that all related control activities are thoroughly implemented.

Drives committed and effective incident management through active participation in incident review, investigation, and corrective action creation.

Promotes a culture of vigorous risk assessment, incident reporting and leading indicators, i.e., Near Misses and Visible Personal Commitment (VPC).

Leadership

Drives vision and purpose for cement manufacturing in Canada to model best-in-class performance and a passion for continuous improvement

Creates competitive and breakthrough strategies that show connection between vision and action

Demonstrates a strategic mindset to address anticipated future opportunities and challenges, with the ability to drive the day to day short-term goals

Responsible for the Manufacturing organization and management systems at the country-level:

Ensures plant organizational effectiveness over time and takes responsibility for talent management and filling of critical positions at country-level (particular focus on Plant Manager Managers and Plant Leadership Teams performance, development and succession).

Ensures manufacturing management processes and systems are robust and

Operational Excellence

Full responsibility for cement manufacturing performance, strategic development, compliance and H&S country-level across Canada.

Full responsibility for manufacturing risk assessments and management at country-level (permitting, raw materials reserves, Information Technology / Operational Technology (IT/OT) security, asset loss/damage prevention)

Ensure all plants within the assigned manufacturing area are properly staffed and coordinated to perform duties effectively.

Implement, execute and measure effective manufacturing processes/procedures that result in sustained improvement of the operational efficiency.

Works with corporate to define and implement process strategies and tactical improvements to profitably increase output and manufacturing flexibility of assigned plants.

Drives the organization to be proactive, flexible and responsive.

Validates alignment of the plants with the company’s business framework and objectives

Responsible for providing reasonable assurance of effective and efficient operations, including actions to prevent and detect fraud and protect Company resources

Cost Optimization

Accountable to set the strategic goals and priorities for Manufacturing (in line with the country strategy), identifying and leveraging synergies at country-level including:

Costs and inventory short-term targets and mid-term ambitions.

Production footprint optimization and major CAPEX projects definition, execution and performance delivering on projects’ financial targets.

Alignment of goals and coordination of actions with Geocycle, Procurement, Sales and Logistics at country-level.Inventory management and optimization above plant-level (country central/virtual warehouse, Material Master Data (MMD) (coding standardization).

Sustainability/Environment/Stakeholder Management

Ensures plant performance within appropriate environmental requirements and develops plans to minimize external impacts from our operations.

Defines and leads the innovation agenda (Processes, Technology, Digital/Plants of Tomorrow, CO2) at country-level.

Engage regulatory bodies, governments at all levels in partnership with the Head of Sustainability, Environment & Public Affairs through industry associations, position papers and policy advocacy that support our sustainability strategy.

Support stakeholder plans and consultation strategies working closely with the communities in which we operate

Engage with internal partners to drive sustainability objectives and priorities globally and locally

Relationships with Others:
Works collaboratively with corporate and other operations leaders to drive and adopt mid-to-long term sustainable best practice process improvements and profitability of assigned plants.

Qualifications

Education:
Post-secondary degree required

Experience & Skill Set:
10-15 years of experience in heavy industrial manufacturing environment

Preference for proficiency in French

Solid experience in setting strategic industrial direction in different plants/markets

A robust track-record on focused business performance

On field process industry exposure together with corporate/regional experience

Significant experience in leading remote and diverse teams

Turnaround experience

Exemplary H&S leadership and known for tackling tough issues in timely manner
