Description
Chaplain B provides Christian based pastoral care services within a community, church, or a residential/shelter setting in keeping with approved pastoral care practices.
This position reports directly to the Corps Officer. Direct reports for this position: up to three (3) volunteers.
HOURS:
- 40 hours per week
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Prayer/Pastoral services:
- Prays with and or leads people to faith in Jesus Christ as opportunity permits.
- Plans and conducts creative worship services, pastoral care programs (including ongoing visitation and personal care), activities, outreach programs, and Bible studies for community members, clients or congregants as applicable.
- Primary activities will include:
- Hospital and home visitations.
- Participation and leadership in the various feasts and celebrations.
- Pastoral visitation of families who have suffered loss, including funeral celebrations, events and memorial visitations.
- Pastoral counseling of individuals as part of a Pathway of Hope program.
- Assists community members, clients, or congregants towards achieving personal and spiritual well-being.
- Works as a team member with other pastoral caregivers in problem-solving for the benefit of individuals; may act as a member of a case management team.
- Communicates in an empathetic and influential manner with clients, congregants, families, staff and community agencies; maintains written records/logs of activities (including activity reports and statistical information).
- Recruits, interviews, trains, orients, documents, and monitors all volunteers coordinating their involvement in program delivery.
- Refers community members and clients to representatives of other faith communities as needed.
- Knows and acts following security procedures of the facility to ensure safety and confidentiality of community members, clients or congregants (e.g., contact with emergency response).
- May act in an intake capacity, admitting clients following standard criteria.
- May serve on Salvation Army Councils and Committees.
- Demonstrate work methods to new employees and volunteers as appropriate.
- The performance of the job requires attentive listening, analyzing, providing guidance, and close observation of the client/environment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Financial and Materials Management:
- The incumbent is involved in minor financial matters regularly, or on a relief basis, or has responsibility for the wise use of their resources. S/He may be authorized to spend, disburse, or collect small amounts of cash. The incumbent has very little input into the annual budget.
Working Conditions:
- The performance of the job requires a moderate amount of driving, standing, walking, physical intervention, assisting clients in wheelchairs/walkers, and some data input.
- The incumbent’s work environment is typically located at various shelters, streets, churches, hospitals, residential programs, drop-in centers, homes and care facilities and public attractions. In particular, the incumbent’s pastoral interaction will be in 19 First Nations Communities along the Highway 16 corridor between Gitsegukla and Houston. The incumbent is therefore required to make light travel (local travel to and from different facilities).
- The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:
- Handling individuals with mental health issues.
- Inclement weather.
- Bad odors.
- Working with homeless people.
- Isolation.
- Dealing with crises.
- Dealing with aggressive people.
- Potential verbal abuse.
- The incumbent works on-call and as needed.
- The incumbent is required to be able to lift to 20 pounds.
- Exposure to hazards:
- Physical attacks by others (e.g., violent clients).
- Exposure to infectious diseases.
- Exposure to bodily fluids.
- Driving in hazardous conditions (when on-call).
- Other potentially dangerous situations (rare).
- Precautionary measures: in addition to general OH&S rules and regulations, the work requires
- Universal precautions, including social distancing and pandemic awareness.
- Handwashing with anti-bacterial soap.
- Awareness of client issues.
- Non-violent crisis intervention training.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Certifications:
- The successful job applicant must have completed High School, plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months. Equivalencies will be considered.
- Bible College Certificate or equivalent. Refer to the “Precautionary Measures” section above.
Experience:
- More than three months but less than one year of prior related experience, including, experience in providing emotional and spiritual support in relevant settings. Experience working with First Nations Communities would be an asset.

- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility
