Position Description
Cytogeneticist– Clinical Lab Director of Genetics (1.0 FTE)
Applications are invited for a full-time Cytogeneticist position in the Division of Genome Diagnostics, Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine at SickKids Hospital.
The Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine at SickKids Hospital is internationally recognized as a major diagnostic and academic centre of excellence in service, teaching, and clinically-oriented research in Paediatric Laboratory Medicine.
The candidate should hold a PhD and/or MD degree and be certified, or board-eligible, in cytogenetics by the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists (CCMG). The applicant will have a strong record of scholarship, experience, and training in cytogenetics, with expertise in the diagnosis of genetic disease. Reporting to the Genome Diagnostics Division Head, the ideal candidate will be a highly motivated individual with demonstrated professional skills, able to work in team settings, and have excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills. Clinical laboratory functions will include oversight of analytical and quality aspects of laboratory analysis, interpretation of results, consultation with physicians, and teaching (staff, students, residents and fellows). Experience with tissue culture and cell banking would be an asset. Certification in molecular genetics would also be advantageous. In addition, successful applicants will be expected to participate in postgraduate teaching at the University of Toronto and various continuing medical education activities.
The successful candidate will be appointed to the Medical and Scientific Staff of SickKids Hospital. Extensive opportunities for collaborative research exist within clinical programs and the Research Institute. Salary and benefits are in accordance with our hospital’s standards for compensation. The applicant should be eligible for an academic appointment in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or full Professor. Rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
