Clinical Research Associate

The Ottawa Hospital: Inspired by research. Driven by compassion

The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute is the research arm of The Ottawa Hospital and an affiliated institute of the University of Ottawa. With more than 1,700 scientists, clinician investigators, trainees and staff, and total revenues of more than $100 million, we are one of the foremost Canadian hospital-based research institutes. We are investigating virtually every major disease and condition, with a focus on answering important health questions and translating our findings into benefits for patients and society.

The research laboratory of Dr Rebecca Auer is currently seeking a research associate with experience in molecular biology to lead the laboratory in the development and translation of novel cancer immunotherapies.

Research Program Overview:
Dr Auer is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Ottawa and the Director of Cancer Research at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI). She is a CIHR-funded surgeon-scientist investigating the underlying mechanisms of immune dysfunction observed in all patients following surgical removal of their cancer. Using a combination of patient-derived blood specimens and murine models, this team has been able to leverage unbiased small molecule functional screens and single cell RNA sequencing to identify novel targets for potential therapeutic intervention. A number of these targets are currently being assessed for clinical translation with strategic academic and industry partnerships. Having undertaken 4 clinical trials based on preclinical findings from the lab, Dr Auer has a proven ability to translate findings from the bench to the bedside and is committed to improving outcomes for cancer patients.

This unique opportunity is well-suited to postdoctoral fellows with demonstrated experience in standard molecular biology techniques and the energy and creativity to co-lead the translational aspect of this program. The candidate would also be expected to assist with the preparation of funding applications, mentoring of graduate students, oversight of general lab operations and the management of multiple projects with competing deadlines.

Qualifications:

  • PhD degree and ideally Postdoctoral experience
  • Experience mentoring students and/or junior research staff
  • Strong desire to move therapies from the lab to the patient through translational clinical trials

Experience and/or willingness to become proficient in the knowledge and technique currently employed in the lab including:

  • Murine models of cancer and blood and tissue samples from cancer patients
  • An understanding of cancer immunology
  • Multi-colour flow cytometry
  • Immune cell isolation techniques, culture methods and functional assays
  • Analysis of sequencing data and/or conduct of CRISPr screens
  • Understanding of regulatory aspects clinical trial operations and reporting

Individuals with additional experience and qualifications that fall into the category of a Senior Research Associate are also welcome to apply.

How to apply:
Interested applicants should submit a brief description of their previous research experience with a CV and any relevant publications to Monica Skillen ([email protected]).

Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience of the candidate in accordance with the OHRI Pay Scale for either a Research Associate or Senior Research Associate.

We thank all applicants for their interest. However, only those invited for an interview will be contacted. The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute is an equal opportunity employer. Upon request, accommodations due to a disability are available throughout the selection process.
