Description
The Community and Family Services Coordinator oversees community outreach through its Community & Family Services, Food Bank and Emergency Disaster Services assistance for the Salvation Army Fredericton. Plan, operate and oversee a three day a week Food Bank. Authorize assistance for Emergency Housing, Clothing, and Transportation needs. Authorize purchases for this ministry. Facilitate donations. Develop new programs to better assist clients and/or their families.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Accountabilities:
Community & Family Services:
- Develop and give oversight to specific community ministries, outreach programs, ensuring ministries objectives are consistently accomplished
- Give support to Christmas programming as required.
- Oversee all operations of the Food Bank
- Oversee Food Box Delivery Teams – 3 sets of delivery teams,
- Provide oversight, supervision, and guidance for volunteers who teach and provide various community outreach programs including, but not limited to,
- English Conversation Circle,
- Life Skills,
- Cooking Classes,
- Budgeting workshops,
- Computer classes,
- Gardening,
- Women’s Exercise classes.
- Schedule and oversee over 20 volunteers each month and approximately 35 volunteers at Christmas time.
- Identify, secure and apply for new funding sources that will advance and adhere to TSA standards and programs
- Provide oversight, supervision, and guidance to Gardeners and Hope Van Street Ministry Coordinator.
- Secure timely media coverage and interviews.
- Complete program reports, log of activities, and statistical recording as required in a timely, accurate, and organized manner
- Manage Community & Family Services Facebook account. Develop annual Facebook marketing posts.
- Do Joint Hunger Awareness Marketing with Community Kitchens and Greener Village Foodbank.
- Recruit and register children and youth for Salvation Army provincial camping programs
- Follow up with children/youth who attend Salvation Army summer camp programs, including their families, to build relationships and establish active links with the Salvation Army’s mission and ministries.
- Participates with EDS Coordinator and Corps Officers, other Salvation Army Agencies to deliver emergency disaster services as needed.
Responsible for Annual Campaigns including, but not limited to:
- Tax Clinic,
- Registering children and arranging transportation for children to attend Scotian Glen Camp,
- Backpack/Back to School Supplies,
- Coats for Kids,
- Breakfast with Santa, and
- Christmas Hamper Program.
- Christmas Toy Drive
- Coordinate with UNB Reds, Men’s Hockey Team, for Teddy Bear Toss.
- Oversee the Christmas Kettle campaign.
- Communal Garden,
- Annual FREE Yard Sale,
- Client Choice Food Bank.*
- Provide innovative ways to better serve clients.
*Food Bank serves 275 families, representing 825 individuals each month.
The Food Bank is open 3 days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 9am – 2pm.
Health and Safety
- Ensure that the Community & Family Services area is tidy in relation to appearance, condition and safety as recommended by Public Health etc.
- Seek out continual education and resources for all areas of responsibilities, specifically regarding COVID-19 requirements as per the local Health Unit.
- Ensure the safety and comfort of the ministry unit by maintaining cleanliness and food safety etc.
- Work in compliance with the NB Health and Safety Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT
Internal: Corps Officers, staff, volunteers, customers/clients, donors
External: government and community social service agencies
MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:
- Reports directly to: Corps Officer
- Provide support and assistance to staff/volunteers; demonstrate work methods to new staff
- Supervise and schedule volunteers.
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
- Receive and process community donations, food deliveries and assist with overall food bank operations, receiving food donations, tidy and organize etc.
- Accepts non-monetary donations
- Gives input into the budget
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a permanent full-time position based on 40 hours per week.
- Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities – some weekend and evening work may be required.
- Flexibility in scheduling is required
- Be able to lift/move up to 25 pounds
- This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a sitting, and standing position for periods of time.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Completion of a University Degree or Community College Certificate in social services or work equivalent
- Current Safe Food Handling and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification is required
- First Aid & CPR Certification would be an asset
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:
- Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience, including experience working with multi-barriered persons
- Must have strong computer skills and experience, experience using Microsoft Office Suite
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Valid New Brunswick Class “G” Driver’s License, provide an original copy of current driver’s abstract that it satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
- Provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.
- Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
- Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
