Working Conditions:
- Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities.
- Ability to lift/move up to 40 lbs.
- Some travel required.
- The above responsibilities must be discharged in accordance with The Salvation Army’s Mission Statement, in a professional manner, exemplifying Christian standards of conduct.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct initial intake assessment to determine immediate needs and supports needed by the client.
- Provide emergency assistance services, i.e. food in accordance with policy.
- Assist with other daily functions at the Community and Family Services office and pantry including sorting and preparation of food donations for distribution, restocking pantry shelves, emptying garbage bins regularly, and light cleaning duties.
- Assist in the maintenance of client files and statistical records as directed.
- Ensure that Ministry Unit policy and procedures are followed for the safe/secure handling of all monetary donations received.
- Assist with the receiving, sorting and storing of donated food.
- Assist with activities outside the Food bank such as food drives, fundraising events and summer camp program.
- Design and draft promotional material that highlights various programs operated by the Community and Family Services as required, subject to supervisory approval.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program in Social Service Work or equivalent.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:
- Some prior related experience in a social services setting would be a definite asset.
Skills and Capabilities:
- Self-motivated and disciplined; competent in making and implementing effective decisions
- Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability; Strong communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to build positive, productive, supportive relationships with the community, volunteers, and staff
- Proficient computer skills in using all aspects of Microsoft Office
- Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
- Maintain information in confidence
- Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal process
- Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner
- Must comply with all Salvation Army policies and procedures and associated legislation
- Valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license, own vehicle and insurance; a current driver abstract
- Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
- Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
This position may be funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program. The following represents the applicant criteria:
- Youth between 16 and 30 years of years of age at the start of the employment.
