POSITION OVERVIEW
This is inspectional and regulatory work in the enforcement of specific bylaws and regulations relating to Community Safety. An incumbent of this class works on a team of specialized enforcement officers who have a primary focus of responding to the social issues affecting businesses and residents. The ideal candidates will possess awareness and sensitivity to social challenges including homelessness, drug addiction and mental illness. A Community Safety Officer investigates and processes complaints regarding bylaw violations; conducts inspections of nuisance properties; establishes and maintains cooperative networks with various internal and external partners; interprets and explains bylaws and regulations; and presents evidence in court. The work involves considerable public interaction which requires the exercise of independent judgement, action, tact, diplomacy and discretion. Work performance is reviewed by a superior for accuracy and completeness, to ensure conformance with established policies/procedures, and in terms of effectiveness of services rendered.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of grade 12 Secondary supplemented by a Post Secondary education, and sound experience in investigative and enforcement work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience is required. The Bylaw Enforcement and Investigative Skills course Level 1 is also required, and the Level 2 course will be considered an asset. First Aid level 1 with CPR and AED will be considered an asset.
Licences & Certificates
Class 5 Driver’s License – Province of British Columbia.
Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of two years experience in the field.
Working Conditions and Efforts
This position involves working outside in inclement weather conditions, standing, walking, driving, with some physical and office work.
Additional Information
In accordance with Article 14.01 of the Collective Agreement, this position may be required to work an afternoon shift consisting of seven (7) hours, exclusive of an unpaid meal period, between 3:00 pm and midnight, Monday to Saturday, and may also be required to work a dayshift on Saturdays.
This position involves extensive contact with the public and close liaison with regulatory departments within the City and outside agencies.
The ideal candidate must possess awareness and sensitivity to community issues such as diversity, homelessness and mental health issues. Must be able to problem solve, investigate complaints and enforce bylaws and regulations with tact, sound judgment and skillful conflict resolution.

Hours of Work:
Hours of work are currently Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. However, please note the hours and days of work are currently under review.
