About Us

The Ministry of Children’s Services works to foster a society in which families are safe and resilient, individuals have sustainable employment, vulnerable Albertans have the supports they require and no one is left behind. Children’s Services mission is to assist Albertans in creating the conditions for safe and supportive homes, communities and workplaces so they have opportunities to realize their full potential. Its core business is to work collaboratively with community partners to deliver citizen-centered programs and services that improve quality of life for Albertans. The ministry deals with topics that vary widely and addresses many of the issues people face across their life span.

The Indigenous and Community Connections (ICC) division provides a strategic leadership role in identifying social-based challenges and opportunities facing Indigenous people, and bringing together Children Services divisions, other ministries, Indigenous communities, and stakeholders to develop innovative and sustainable solutions to address these challenges and opportunities.

The Cultural unit plays a strategic role in providing opportunities for Children Services staff to develop and enhance their knowledge, skills and understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories, and aspirations, in order to work effectively and in a culturally appropriate and safe manner with Indigenous clients, partners and communities. The work of the Cultural unit involves providing Ministry staff with a holistic understanding of Indigenous people and communities so that a change in organizational culture begins to occur whereby Indigenous values, beliefs, histories and aspirations are understood, accepted, and reflected in all areas of the Ministry’s work.

Role

Are you passionate for helping your community understand Indigenous cultures, histories and aspirations?

The Indigenous and Community Connections branch of Children’s Services Indigenous Partnerships and Strategic Services division has two Cultural Education Coordinator opportunities that are key to make an impact in influencing a change in organizational culture whereby Indigenous values, beliefs, histories and aspirations are understood, accepted and reflected in our Ministry’s work.

Reporting to the Manager of Culture, you will be providing comprehensive support to the unit by gathering, analyzing and synthesizing knowledge and information from a variety of sources to develop and implement cultural understanding strategies, in order to foster a more culturally respectful and culturally inclusive organization.

Your role will be critical to influence the Ministry to integrate strategies that will meet the needs of Indigenous people, promoting the inclusion of an “Indigenous lens” in the development of other processes throughout the Ministry and strengthening relationships with internal and external Indigenous stakeholders.

By conducting environmental scans, needs assessments, and anecdotal research you will be able to identify emerging trends, issues and promising practices. Your highly developed communication skills will contribute to the development and coordination of materials for the unit, plan and facilitate meetings, workshops and training sessions, and develop recommendations for consideration of senior decision-makers.

This position functions with a high degree of independence and professionalism in an environment characterized by a high volume of work carried out under time specific deadlines with frequent interruptions and changing priorities.

As much of the work of the Cultural unit is done in collaboration with other Children Services divisions, other ministries, and internal and external stakeholders, you will be expected to develop and maintain links with stakeholders and be guided by the principles of engagement, collaboration and relationship-building.
