POSITION: Digital Marketing and Communications Officer
STATUS: Full-time position (37.5 hours per week)
REPORTS TO: Director of Marketing
SCOPE
Reporting to the Director of Marketing, and working collaboratively as a member of the Fund Development & Communications team, the Digital Marketing and Communications Officer is responsible for managing communications activities of the organization in support of strategic and tactical goals. This includes the development and execution of communications and marketing plans and activities to increase the Dementia Society brand, support program and service awareness and interest, and support fund development initiatives to advance our organizational mission. To this end, the incumbent is expected to bring best practices to our marcom operations, to establish and monitor digital marketing and communication processes and performance, and to facilitate effective communications aligned with the organization’s values and brand.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position works primarily at the Dementia Society’s central office in Ottawa (from home during the pandemic) but does involve local travel for interactions with stakeholders as needed, and travel throughout Renfrew County may be required. Hours are generally 8.30 a.m. until 4 p.m. with 30 minutes for lunch and the possibility of some work on weekends or during special campaigns.
RESPONSIBILITIES
General
- Provides input to strategic communications and marketing plans
- Develops an annual operational, campaign and tactical work-plans to achieve strategic and tactical results
- Executes on plans to disseminate messages and materials
- Provides communications and marketing support to organization (including Senior Leadership, Programs, Services, Education and Fund Development teams) to achieve their organizational goals, notably:
- Works closely with Fund Development Officer to support fundraising and donor relations
- Works closely with Program Coordinator to promote support, education, and activities programs
- Participates as staff support on Board of Directors’ Fund Development and Communications subcommittee
- Supports the Director of Marketing in strategic projects
Content Development and Management
- Develops and produces professional quality marketing and communications materials, website and social content in multiple media and formats (i.e. copy, video, graphics)
- Serves as Dementia Society story developer and archivist creating powerful client testimonials; interacting with clients; obtaining and managing appropriate consents.
- Proofreads, edits and coordinates translation of content
Brand Stewardship
- Serves as steward of the Dementia Society brand, educates staff and partners about use, and ensures consistency across all organizational platforms
Digital Media
Responsible for the Dementia Society’s digital presence, ensuring it reflects the organizations’ values of excellence and accountability. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Managing content development (copy, digital, video and graphic assets)
- Identifying emerging opportunities and best practices in digital media
- Actively monitoring and safeguarding the Dementia Society reputation and brand
- Performance tracking, reporting, analysis and recommendations for continuous improvement to enhance performance (Google Analytics, internal dashboard)
- Management of 3rd party digital service providers (technical, marketing, etc.)
Website
- Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Content management
- Search Engine Optimization (SEO and SEM)
- Management of Google Ad Grant program
- Coordination and integration of Dementia Society-managed Websites:
- DementiaHelp.ca
- ReThinkDementia.ca
- Dementia613.ca
- BrainyActiveChallenge.ca
- Integration with 3rd party sites such as Shopify, CanadaHelps, etc.
Social Media
- Management of an active and professional presence on Dementia Society social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn)
- Development and management of a social media strategy consistent with organizational goals and values, including differentiated social media channels
- Development and management of the Dementia Society’s direct electronic communications (i.e. newsletters, single-issue communications) including list management (Mail Chimp and Raiser’s Edge NXT Marketing)
Other
- Media relations: nurtures interest in Dementia Society news, including establishing and managing positive relationships with community publications and maintaining a database of media contacts.
- Creative Development: Manages creation, distribution and library of promotional materials

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- University, college education in communications, marketing, public relations or a related field
- 5 years related experience
- Proven ability to develop and execute marketing and communication programs
- Understanding of a not-for-profit environment considered an asset
- Bilingualism (preferred): Excellent oral and written communication skills in one official language, and strong working knowledge of the other
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Able to work independently and contribute to a positive team environment
- Proficiency/experience in the following software applications:
- Microsoft Office, including MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Word Press
- Desktop or Web publishing applications like Abode Creative Suite, Canva
- HootSuite or similar social media management tool
- Social media applications Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn including experience creating
- Google: Analytics, Ad Grant Program
- Strong attention to detail
- Impeccable editing and proofing skills
- Media relations training/experience an asset
- Ability to work to deadlines and manage a multitude of tasks
- Flexible, and a good sense of humour is valued!
