Director, Clinical and Experiential Learning

Reporting to the Dean, Faculty of Applied Health and Community Studies (FAHCS), the Director, Clinical and Experiential Learning is responsible for leading the experiential learning activities across all programs, as well as the on-campus clinical spaces. In particular, the Director will be held accountable for the organization, execution and strategic direction of experiential learning within the Faculty. These activities will mandate the Director to collaborate with faculty and staff from all programs, as well as other members of the FAHCS leadership team and the broader Sheridan Community.

In partnership, the Director will develop exemplar processes for field placements (i.e. review and revise manuals, elucidate best practices in placement standards and student guidelines, etc.), develop a systematic and ethical approach to vulnerable sector/health records verification, maintain existing and develop new partnerships, and collaboratively establish a records management system. Clinically, the Director will work in partnership with members of the FAHCS administration, faculty and staff to enhance Sheridan’s on-campus learning environments. Specifically, the Director will ensure the Faculty is meeting its responsibilities in providing service to the public, collaborate with faculty and staff to enhance the physical resources by recommending change and be a partner in the delivery of high quality education to our students. These duties also include the opportunity to enhance the Inter-professional Education (IPE) within the Faculty. Finally, the Director will collaborate with additional members of the Sheridan community to establish a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) hub.

What You’ll be Doing

Providing strategic leadership and operational management of the clinical and experiential learning portfolio areas including engaging in the visioning, ongoing development, delivery, review/modification of portfolio programs/services to ensure quality, interconnected efforts with other Faculties and departments, and reflection of emerging needs, technology, demographic influences etc.;

Providing leadership, guidance and expertise for optimizing experiential learning and simulation curriculum design and delivery according to best practices in healthcare and education;

Leading and coordinating a team and managing resources (financial, facilities) to deliver on priorities while ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, policies and procedures;

Participating in redefining and redesigning FAHCS’ operational clarity; developing more efficient, impactful delivery models and is instrumental in the development and leadership of the FAHCS vision and the strategic plan;

Developing innovative opportunities for inter-professional practice and education;

Establishing strategic, external relationships and partnerships to support and enhance portfolio areas;

Developing collaborative working relationships with Faculties, other support services departments. Leading college wide collaborative teams in the effective design and delivery of tailored portfolio programs/initiatives, research studies and in the development of innovative models;

Maintaining currency in field of expertise and education system; engaging others in professional development;

Performing other related duties, as assigned.

The successful candidate will also meet the following qualifications:

Master’s in Health Sciences or related field (Ph.D. preferred)

7 years of clinical experience as a regulated healthcare professional in Ontario including experience with healthcare education curriculum development, learning assessment, program evaluation, faculty development and scholarship (equivalency will be considered)

Experience with metrics and quality assurance processes and ability to build a framework for an evidence-based culture

Experience in the use of simulation as a learning modality in a health professions learning environment (e.g. higher education or healthcare environments)

Sound understanding of the challenges, emerging trends and issues in healthcare education Instructional experience in clinical, lab, and simulation settings and exposure to simulation technology and applications (preferred).

Campus Location: Davis (may be assigned activities at any Sheridan campus) once normal campus operations resume. This position is currently working remotely.
