The Role:
The Edmonton Valley Zoo is currently home to over 350 animals and more than 100 species. The Zoo has grown significantly since it opened in 1959 as The Storyland Valley Zoo in its current location in Laurier Park. The Edmonton Valley Zoo is an educational facility which contributes to the conservation of global biodiversity through its participation in the Species Survival Plan (SSP). At this time, we are searching for the next Director, Edmonton Valley Zoo & Specialty Facilities to continue the stunning transformation of Edmonton Valley Zoo into a special place that inspires love and learning of the natural world.

Recreation facility programs and services enrich the quality of life, embrace wellness, and provide personal growth and development opportunities across all age groups. The Edmonton Valley Zoo & Specialty Facilities section delivers high quality, memorable experiences for individuals and families in safe and healthy environments. Facilities serve as community hubs, bringing people together in welcoming and vibrant settings. Diverse recreational and entertainment venues and events attract visitors and tourists and are an essential part of the fabric and character of Edmonton’s international profile. Facilities serve as a legacy for the enjoyment of current and future generations; facilities preserve and enhance Edmonton’s rich heritage.

First year goals and deliverables:
Manage facility and site operations for the Edmonton Valley Zoo, John Janzen Nature Centre, John Walter Museum, City Arts Centre, and City Archives and Artifacts Centre

Lead a team to ensure a primary focus on conservation, education, and enjoyment at these premiere attractions

Anticipate business opportunities, influence policy, planning and initiatives, and foster a culture of accountability through performance measurement

Integrate multi-disciplinary teams to work collaboratively with stakeholders supporting corporate priorities

Build new and innovative collaborative partnerships with external agencies such as other orders of government, community organizations, and internal departments and branches

Qualifications :
What does success look like?

Apply knowledge or training and/or education in Recreation Administration, Conservation Biology, Zoology, Business Administration or related disciplines

Utilize current or past experience managing teams in a large complex organization

Lead and manage change, build organizational talent and capacity, and achieve organizational outcomes

Build a respectful workplace culture through a values-based influencer approach and work collaboratively

Balance strategic planning with executive level consulting and communication skills

Knowledge of the regulatory environment is preferred

Understand complex municipal subject matter and build influential relationships with Council, external agencies, orders of government, community organizations, and internal departments and branches

Communicate with strong political acumen, strategic planning, issue resolution and decision-making skills

Present complex ideas to diverse audiences, build positive relationships and establish clear expectations

Service excellence, embracing diversity and promoting inclusiveness

Align leadership, organizational climate and resources to support the corporation’s strategic management framework
