Overview

At WorkSafeBC, we’re committed to creating a province free from workplace injury and illness and to providing service driven by our core values of integrity, accountability, and innovation. By partnering with workers and employers, we help British Columbians come home from work safe every day.

We’re looking for a collaborative and creative leader with a passion and strong knowledge of employee occupational health, safety, and mental and physical wellness. You have substantial experience overseeing absence and disability management programs and other programs that support healthy work environments, safe return to work for employees coming back from disability claims, and the prevention of injuries in the workplace. In addition, your background will enable you to operationalize a key organizational priority – to develop a comprehensive and effective mental health program for employees.

As the director of Employee Health, Safety, and Wellness, you’ll be accountable for coordinating resources, advancing priorities, and implementing consistent policies for the department. You’ll monitor trends in emerging workplace health programs, including mental health, and hold overall responsibility for the actions, outcomes, and quality service delivery for our employee’s health, safety, and wellness.

In this role, you’ll ensure that our employee health, safety, and wellness programs meet legal contractual requirements and reflect our reputation as a leader and regulator in occupational health and safety.

Consider joining us in this unique opportunity to ensure our organization is positioned to meet current and long-term employee health and wellness needs to support a positive employee experience and efficient management and delivery of workplace health services to the organization.

What you’ll do

As the director of Employee Health, Safety, and Wellness, you will:

Oversee identification of current and future issues, ensuring the organization is positioned to meet current and long-range needs and trends.

Lead in issue identification, planning, implementation, and assessment of policies, programs, services, and relationships to support a positive employee experience in the management and delivery of workplace health services to our organization.

Develop and operationalize a comprehensive and effective mental health program for our employees.

Oversee the partnership and development of strategic initiatives and overall management functions of the department, working in partnership with other WorkSafeBC leaders.

Partner with senior leaders and executives in the planning and execution of workplace health related legislative and regulatory changes, collective agreements, policies and other directives impacting WorkSafeBC operations.

Ensure that workplace health planning and evaluation is based on data profiling, evidence-based, quality practice environments, and anticipate and respond to shifts in services and changes in the workplace health environment.

Establish workplace health performance metrics, monitor and take applicable action where there are shortfalls.

Promote a quality service-oriented approach in providing services to external and internal clients. Respond to clients’ needs and areas of concern in a timely manner, taking appropriate action to proactively resolve issues.

Manage and direct assigned staff in maintaining high levels of service and in achieving divisional priorities and objectives.

Create a supportive working environment within the department by ensuring effective communication, promoting teamwork, providing opportunities for staff involvement in planning and recognizing employees’ contributions and achievements.

Plan, develop and manage the financial resources within the allocated budget.

Implement the provisions of the WorkSafeBC’s Corporate Safety, Health and Security policy within assigned area, including performing regular safety inspections, reporting real or potential hazards, holding regular safety meetings and conducting accident investigations.

Is this a good fit for you?

We’re looking for someone who can:
Provide clear, effective, and open communication promoting teamwork, encouraging new and innovative ideas in a proactive and forward-thinking environment

Effectively influence others to attain objectives and deliverables

Identify opportunities for improvement within the departments and implement changes effectively to ensure success

Inspire and lead with exceptional relationship building and conflict resolution skills, and an understanding of the diverse needs and interests of our stakeholders
