The Director, Employee Relations leads the Employee Relations team supporting Capital Markets and other groups as directed, with primary accountability for effective management of workplace risk, including compliance with legal/regulatory requirements for employment and employee relations best practices. The incumbent ensures effective support, advice and counsel are provided to employees and managers dealing with a variety of complex Employee Relations issues while ensuring positive employee experiences and maintains our commitment to consistently applying RBC Values and Code of Conduct.
In partnership with Capital Markets, the incumbent sustains and strengthens RBC’s value of integrity and business ethics practices, ensures misconduct is addressed appropriately and reports on Code of Conduct breaches and conduct monitoring initiatives.
What will you do?
Employee Conduct & Risk Culture
Ensure unethical and disrespectful conduct is promptly investigated; lead management of employee conduct investigations, including Respectful Workplace matters and other Code breaches and ethical concerns
Ensure any inappropriate conduct is appropriately addressed; provide advice to senior leaders and HR partners regarding remediation
Cultivate and leverage external network (industry peers and associations, advocacy groups) to obtain information that provides competitive intelligence and details regarding trends
Monitor relevant legal / regulatory developments, identify and report trends and emerging issues through data analytics and insights. Regularly engage with partners in Compliance and CM Governance and Reporting to discuss Conduct matters and prepare reports on CM Conduct and Culture for Senior Leadership
Conduct Monitoring and Reporting
Develop, implement and manage HR processes and systems to monitor employee conduct, aligning with business conduct monitoring processes to connect dots, provide integrated insights and identify proactive strategies to prevent misconduct
Improve the analysis of employee misconduct identifying and reporting trends and emerging issues including understanding the root cause of misconduct to report insights to the business and functional partners, as required, for additional monitoring
Advice and Counsel on Conduct and Other Employment Related Issues
Oversee team’s management/resolution of specific workplace issues and incidents, including investigations of employee concerns and escalations
Provide guidance to senior leaders to resolve high risk, sensitive workplace issues, including in the areas of performance management, attendance management and Respectful Workplace matters
Provide Employee Relations advice on restructuring initiatives, role eliminations and terminations, working with the appropriate internal partners as required
People Leadership
Develop employee goals that align to team vision and demonstrates commitment to RBC Leadership Model, Collective Ambition and Values
Provide real-time, constructive performance & behaviour coaching that strengthens employee engagement and enablement
Support & monitor employee development/career management to build/grow professional capabilities
Foster an open and ‘safe to speak up’ environment that drives a high performance culture
What do you need to succeed?
Must-have
Minimum of 8 years’ relevant work experience in progressively more senior roles
Expertise in Canadian employee relations practices and employment law requirements (federal & provincial) typically achieved through progressive HR, people management or legal experiences.
Minimum 3 years’ direct people leadership experience
Demonstrated experience in aligning and integrating risk management with business and HR strategy
Exceptional ability in establishing and managing relationships with senior level stakeholders
Proven ability to drive execution and achieve business results
Previous experience leading a high performance culture & inspire direct reports to values-based behaviours
Thought leadership, strategic thinking, analytical and problem solving capabilities
Outstanding oral and written communication skills
Excellent collaboration capabilities and ability to engage others to work towards a shared vision and common goals.
