The Role:
The Urban Planning and Economy department shapes the way Edmonton grows by planning changes to its urban form, stewarding the environment, fostering prosperity, and setting corporate direction to move our city towards the Edmonton envisioned by the citizens we serve.
Reporting to the Branch Manager, Planning and Environment Services, the Director Environment and Climate Resilience will lead the City of Edmonton’s strategic action of Climate Resilience. The Director provides in-depth knowledge and practical application on environment and climate related programs within the municipal setting.
The Director will lead and support a team of managers, technical leaders and professional staff engaged in program and service evaluation, innovation, citizen experience, continuous improvement and service design. This position is instrumental in advancing the branch, department and corporate strategic plans.
First year goals and deliverables:
Understand and implement the Environment and Climate Resilience goals as outlined in the Corporate Business Plan, Connect Edmonton and The City Plan. This includes the Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and Energy Transition Strategy
Develop a governance model and management policies and standards for the Corporation for the Enviso and Utilities Program
Champion a balance between long term objectives and short term realities
Anticipate business opportunities, influence policy, planning and initiatives, and foster a culture of accountability through performance measurement
Integrate multi-disciplinary teams to work collaboratively with stakeholders supporting corporate priorities
Build new and innovative collaborative partnerships with external agencies such as other orders of government, community organizations, and internal departments and branches
Support work to create modern and leading energy efficiency and renewable energy strategies, policies and implementation plans
Qualifications :
What does success look like?
Apply knowledge or training and/or education in Environment, Engineering, Business Administration, Finance, Public Administration or a related field
A professional designation such as a P.Eng, P.Ag or other related designation would be considered an asset
Utilize current or previous experience in a senior leadership role within a large, complex organization managing a professional team in the environment, climate and energy space
Integrate multi-disciplinary teams to work collaboratively with stakeholders supporting corporate priorities
Think strategically to address large, complex issues, to manage emergent projects while steering dynamically
Build a respectful workplace culture through a values-based influencer approach and work collaboratively
Balance strategic planning with executive level consulting and communication skills
Understand complex municipal subject matter and build influential relationships with Council, external agencies, orders of government, community organizations, and internal departments and branches
Present complex ideas to diverse audiences, build positive relationships and establish clear expectations
Communicate with strong political acumen, strategic planning, issue resolution and decision-making skills
Service excellence, embracing diversity and promoting inclusiveness
