The Environmental Science and Protection Division is responsible for the environmental review of major projects and monitoring the air and water resources of New Brunswick. It provides scientific assessment and environmental protection advice and reports on the state of the environment; develops programs and policies; and provides technical, scientific and engineering support. This includes interpreting, evaluating and maintaining awareness of research and developments in environmental health issues and initiatives on behalf of the department. The division consists of the Environmental Impact Assessment Branch, the Air and Water Sciences Branch and the Healthy Environments Branch.

The Department of Environment and Local Government is seeking a Director to lead the Healthy Environments Branch.

What you will do

As Director of the Healthy Environments Branch and reporting the Assistant Deputy Minister of the Environmental Science and Protection Division, you will, among other things:

work collaboratively with other government departments, research institutions, and non-governmental organizations to lead, coordinate, develop, plan, and manage environmental health policies and programs,

lead the branch to assess or anticipate emerging environmental health hazards in New Brunswick.

oversee the provision of scientific and engineering support and advice, standards development, and training to the department and its partners;

report on the state of environmental health in New Brunswick and align work objectives to support the ecological determinants of health;

develop and manage regular branch planning, project budgets and schedules, prepare requests for proposals and contracts;

support branch staff through planning, organizing, directing, setting performance objectives, evaluating performance, providing advice and support, as well as providing motivation and coaching;

actively participate on the division’s senior management team and provide advice to Assistant Deputy Minister on matters relating to environmental health; and

work with the Department of Health to implement the Memorandum of Understanding with Public Health New Brunswick.

Work environment

Office location: Marysville Place, 20 McGloin Street, Fredericton

Office layout: Office with surrounding open cubicles

Your Team: Includes a small team of environmental health professionals that works as part of a multi-disciplinary team to achieve its objectives.

Standard hours of work: Monday – Friday, 8:15-4:30, however some work outside of these hours may be required from time to time to meet work objectives

Some travelling may be required from time to time

You possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to problem-solve creatively and to think on your feet. Your attitude, skills and interests are just as important as your area of study. We are looking for diverse backgrounds that bring a combination of the following:

Essential Qualifications:
University degree in science, engineering or health related field and a minimum of eight (8) years of related work experience.

A minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience is required.

Specialized subject matter expertise and knowledge in areas such as: environmental health; risk assessment; management and communication. A sound knowledge of health promotion, protection and population health principles is also necessary.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Written and spoken competence in English and French is required. Please state your language capability.

Wage

Pay Band 7 – $79,898 – $96,642 annually
