Description
The Director, Human Resources is responsible for managing the HR team and leading operations related to managing people within the organization. Reporting to the CEO, this role develops and implements HR strategic plans and programs that are aligned with achieving IGNITE’s organizational goals.
This role assists in advancing equity and promoting an inclusive culture that emphasizes diversity and idea sharing. This role is also responsible for providing strategic direction related to workforce planning, talent management, leadership development and coaching, and employee engagement.
The Director, Human Resources collaborates with key business stakeholders to provide insight and guidance on all functional HR areas including recruitment, training & development, performance management, compensation, employee relations, health & safety, and employment law compliance.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
Strategic leadership
- Develop and implement leading HR strategies and initiatives aligned with organizational strategy and goals.
- Developing, managing, and supporting data-based diversity and inclusion strategies with goal of fostering an equitable workplace.
- Analyze trends and internal needs to develop and administer programs, policies, and procedures to address the organization’s HR requirements.
- Provide strategic consulting and execution on key HR functions including organizational design, change management, culture design, recognition and rewards, workforce planning, talent acquisition, engagement, and retention.
- Establish and analyze HR analytics and metrics to identify trends, produce reports and provide recommendations for improvement.
- Identify and drive the communication and sharing of best practices to facilitate continuous improvement.
Employee Relations & Communication
- Identify and analyze employee relations issues and recommend appropriate actions to achieve optimal performance.
- Establish and maintain strong business relationships with leadership and serve as a valued business advisor on HR functions.
- Addresses employee questions and concerns. Investigates complaints and advises management on appropriate course of action.
- Integrate approaches to facilitate equity, diversity and inclusion into recruitment, training, and workplace culture.
- Keep the employee handbook up-to-date and communicate policies and procedures to ensure employees are always informed.
- Communicate and administer health & safety policies and online social events to ensure the wellbeing of employees.
- Create and distribute announcements when employees join or exit the organization.
Talent Acquisition & Management
- Build a strong employer brand to attract talented and diverse candidates.
- Design and implement a talent acquisition and management model to strategically manage talent.
- Manage full-cycle recruitment including sourcing, screening, testing, interviewing, reference checking and employee orientation.
- Creates and manages all documentation including job descriptions, job postings, interview templates, and employment offers.
- Proactively build applicant pipelines and support leadership in assessing resource needs as the organization grows and develops.
- Establish a simple and effective performance management system including coaching, mentoring, and formal appraisals.
- Administer an employee recognition program with various cost-effective ways to reward achievements.
- Provide training, education, and continuous learning opportunities for employees to upgrade talent or improve skills.
- Manage the exit of employees including conducting exit interviews or preparing termination plans and documentation.
HR Administration
- Develop and manage the Human Resources budget.
- Manage and maintain employee files, records and documentation including vacation requests, absences, sick leave and more.
- Collect and analyze statistical data to evaluate IGNITE’s workforce in accordance with diversity standards and goals.
- Conduct salary reviews and make compensation recommendations to support market adjustments, promotions, and other off-cycle compensation changes.
- Manage new employee set-up including payroll, benefits, pension, cell phone and more
- Support short term and long-term disability claims, including employee communication and documentation.
- Develop and monitor return to work (RTW) programs and options, provides mediation support, communications and advice as required.
Other duties:
- Update job knowledge by participating in conferences and educational opportunities; reading professional publications; and maintaining professional networks.
- Liaise with the various provincial ministries, boards, external lawyers, consultants, and insurance brokers as required.

Education, Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or Commerce
- Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) Designation
- At least 10 years working in Human Resources, with at least five years working in a position of HR leadership.
- At least two years of experience managing direct reports.
- Business experience working in roles outside of the HR function is an asset, but not required.
- Experience working for a non-profit organization is an asset, but not required.
- Developing and implementing an HR strategic plan and associated programs, managing a budget, conducting compensation benchmarking and developing and implementing an effective performance management process.
- Assessing and presenting HR metrics and analytics including turnover rates, diversity statistics, absence rates, employee productivity, and more.
- Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Demonstrated experience using recruitment/talent acquisition including recruitment tools such as LinkedIn, Indeed, Charity Village and various social media.
- Up-to-date knowledge of employment law including employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Human Rights Code, Pay Equity Act, and all other legislation, regulations and government agencies relevant to Human Resources.
