Director, Medication Safety

Job Description:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision, Values and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reporting to the Executive Medical Director and Executive Director, Medication Systems and Medical Informatics, the Director works in a partnership with pharmacist, physician and nursing leadership in the planning, delivery and evaluation of Island Health’s Medication System Strategy. Critical components of the strategy include the implementation and monitoring of safe, standardized clinical processes related to Best Possible Medication History, Medication Reconciliation, Orders Management, Medication Storage and Dispensing, and Medication Administration and Documentation. The Director co-develops a medication safety monitoring, measuring and improvement framework that can be operationalized through the quality and clinical operational structures. The Director is responsible, with their professional partners and operational leaders, to ensure that core medication safety related quality improvement initiatives are adopted within clinical practices and processes across care venues and within professional designations.

The Director works with key stakeholders in Integrated Health Services, Medical Affairs, and Professional Practice to achieve outcomes identified in the Island Health strategic plan and the portfolio goals and objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training And Experience

A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Master’s degree in a related discipline such as Nursing, Pharmacy or Health Sciences plus seven (7) years’ recent, related educational and operational management experience in a complex health care environment including progressive clinical practice, education, research, project management and leadership experiences.

Skills And Abilities

Demonstrated ability to lead change and to build and support management teams.

High-level communication skills, demonstrated organizational, planning and interpersonal skills.

Ability to adapt readily to rapid and changing environment and respond with initiative.

Ability to interact professionally with various levels of personnel, both internally and externally.

In-depth understanding of health services and operations.
