Job Description
We’re looking for a Director of Accounting, located in the EST timezone (US or Canada), who will primarily lead external financial reporting, technical accounting and accounting operations. You would be a great match for this role if you have worked previously worked in a controller role for a publicly listed company. You should also have experience managing people and building strong globally distributed teams.
You might describe yourself as someone who is able to translate your subject matter expertise into easy-to-understand concepts that translate seamlessly across the organization. You enjoy diving deep into projects, but also know how to zoom out and keep the big picture in full view.
Here’s what the role entails.
In this role you will:
Oversee Shopify’s external financial reporting
Oversee all technical accounting matters and position papers
Oversee all accounting operations teams including:
Accounts payable
Global payroll
Billing and accounts receivable
Equity accounting and administration
Treasury accounting
Oversee all accounting and reporting related to the balance sheet, including:
Leases, subleases and lease liabilities
Inventory
Long-term assets
Accounts receivable and other current assets
Accounts Payable and other current liabilities
Develop and manage financial controls in accordance with the company’s procedures
Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures
Coordinate and manage the external audit
Support internal audits
Help scale accounting operations worldwide
Drive accounting-wide efficiencies and value-added improvements
Support executive initiatives
Help grow, develop, and empower a world-class team
Qualifications
You will need to have:
Strong knowledge of US GAAP
Ability to develop and maintain strong internal and external working relationships
Experience supervising accounting staff
Experience working at a multinational company
Enthusiasm as a team player and developer of talent
Strong analytical, decision making, planning, and organizational skills
Strong project management skills, including ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, changing environment
A professional accounting designation (CA, CMA, CGA, CPA)
