This position is located in our office in Ottawa, Ontario. As a result of the global pandemic, NSERC and SSHRC employees are currently working remotely until further notice. Note that the candidate is responsible for any relocation fees. The employer will not accept any expense claims.

Job Summary

The Director, Programs is accountable for providing operational direction and leadership in the design, delivery and evaluation of programs managed by the division or secretariat to enhance the goals of the agency (ies) in supporting innovation, research and capacity building that delivers long-term benefits to Canadian society and the economy.

Statement of Qualifications

Education

A bachelor degree from a recognized university

Foreign Credential Validation against Canadian Standards

Experience

  • Significant experience in the management or research and/or award funding programs and merit review processes

Significant experience in developing and maintaining successful relationships and partnerships with senior officials from government, academic and non-governmental sectors

Significant experience in managing human, financial and information resources

**Experience in researching, developing, recommending, negotiating and implementing major complex projects and initiatives

Experience in strategic and business planning

Experience in providing strategic advice to senior management

Experience in change management.

Experience in the biomedical sector is considered as an asset

  • Significant is equivalent to three (3) or more years of experience.

**Less than one (1) year of experience.

Knowledge

Knowledge of the mandate of the granting councils, strategic priorities and situation within the federal apparatus (e.g., policy issues, as they relate to government priorities and operations)

Knowledge of the broad strategic issues, both domestic and international, and major challenges facing the research sector

Knowledge of the structures, policies and priorities governing the management of research and policy development within the federal government

Knowledge of the structure and current issues in the academic sector in Canada
