Director, Research and Development (R&D)

We are looking for a Director of Research and Development (R&D) with a solid background in building feature rich products who proactively shares knowledge of technology risks and opportunities to build competitive advantage and improve efficiency and effectiveness of our retail management software. The director of R&D is a hybrid business / technical position and requires a strong blend of people skills, project management, product vision and an understanding and coaching of the agile process to team members.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for helping to manage priorities and ensuring smooth running of activities and the coordination of team operations on a daily basis and will be a highly motivated self-starter and team player; with a focus on team and client success, and operations efficiency. This individual will be strategic, proactive, and anticipatory in their thinking and provide significant value to the business units through the effective use of technology.

Responsibilities:
Help to translate business goals and product requirements into actionable plans;

Organize, lead, and inspire your team. Translate high-level organizational goals to staff work goals;

Ensure that development projects are delivered on time and within budget by periodically checking the quality of work;

Manage the product development activities; priorities; assisting product owners to manage backlog and sprints as required;

Provide ongoing executive updates, prioritizing initiatives, and escalating roadblocks to executive leadership;

Maintain the highest levels of security, promoting a culture and practice of security awareness;

Communicate development progress and issues to senior management and across the organization;

Manage resource constraints through a technology intake and prioritization process;

Proactively foster and build channels of communication across business units to ensure collaboration and achievement of organizational objectives;

Within the existing products; Own technology standards, architectural direction, technical documentation, and quality of the core code;

Continually evaluate opportunities to enhance productivity and implement appropriate changes to improve processes, analyze performance statistics & support best practices;

Perform the necessary validations and ensure the productivity and participation of everyone, while ensuring that the team remains focused on the objective of projects;

Ensure the application of the Scrum process by acting as a facilitator, protecting the team, and eliminating daily obstacles;

Create and maintain detailed project plan, tracking progress toward quarterly goals and providing guidance on tactical product execution;

Collaborate, Develop, and execute technology and business transformation roadmaps for the refactoring of inefficient software processes;

Enablement of excellent team collaboration, the establishment of a prioritization score and committee, and by making the process fully transparent to the entire organization;

Leverage his/her expertise in process architecture and technology and data execution to lead and improve upon the engagement model between business, data, and technology stakeholders that will enable a high degree of collaboration and clear accountability across the delivery lifecycle;

Building, leading, and managing a diverse team, including hiring and termination decisions, performance management, resource management, work allocation, and career progression;

Responsible for timely project status and departmental cost analysis;

Collaborating with cross-functional leaders for product innovation planning.

What will make you stand out

Deep knowledge practicing Agile/SCRUM methodology and having a scrum master certification is an important advantage;

Technical development knowledge; Delphi, Cobol, C#, C++, VB, MSSQL, MYSQL, PostGres;

Retail Management Software experience / understanding a definite asset;

Bilingual (English & French) is an asset.

Key Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in a technical discipline;

Proven experience leading technology decisions and development in the software industry;

5+ years managing development: design, architecture, deployment, testing and security experience;

Proven experience with desktop application development;

Understanding /knowledge of technologies, development and database environments like .NET (Xamarin, C#), Delphi, Microfocus Cobol (AcuCobol), MSSQL, MYSQL, Postgres;

Strategic and Creative thinking. This role will produce technical roadmaps and accompanying implementation strategies;

Experience‌ ‌enabling‌ ‌product‌ ‌innovation‌ ‌and‌ ‌solutions‌ ‌through‌ ‌regular‌ ‌alignment‌ ‌and‌ ‌consultation‌ ‌with‌ ‌internal‌ ‌and‌ ‌external‌ stakeholders‌;

Experience‌ ‌working‌‌ ‌with‌ ‌security‌ ‌to‌ ‌make‌ ‌sure‌ ‌all‌ ‌security/compliance‌ ‌requirements‌ ‌are‌ ‌on‌ ‌track‌;

A “change agent” with proven ability to lead change across an organization in matters that require a major shift in thought and behavior;

You ‌have‌ ‌previously‌ ‌worked‌ ‌with‌ ‌Agile‌ ‌software‌ ‌development‌ ‌methods‌ ‌– Agile/ SCRUM certification an asset;

You‌ ‌have‌ ‌strong‌ ‌communication‌ ‌skills‌ ‌and‌ ‌the‌ ‌ability‌ ‌to‌ ‌collaborate‌ ;

You‌ ‌can‌ ‌influence‌ ‌without‌ ‌direct‌ ‌authority‌ ‌and‌ ‌secure‌ ‌support‌ ‌from‌ ‌key‌ ‌stakeholders, ‌‌including‌ ‌senior‌ ‌management‌; ‌

3 to 5 years’ experience‌ ‌in‌ ‌building‌ ‌high‌ ‌performing‌ ‌teams‌ ‌and‌ making recruitment decisions;

Familiar and proficient with the use of tools such as Jira, Confluence, SharePoint, MS-project, Word, and Excel;

Need to be a good communicator and comfortable in conflict resolution.
