Overall Accountability
The Education Assistant, Severe Behaviour supports teachers and therapeutic specialists in providing specialized programming for students with severe social/emotional and/or behavioural disabilities. The Education Assistant, Severe Behaviour is a member of a multi-disciplinary team attached to specific programs within Calgary Catholic Schools.
Specific Accountabilities
Assists in providing programming support and with student self-care (dressing, toileting/diapering etc.)
Participates in providing one-on-one support for Learner Support Plan goals and objectives, while promoting a safe, calm and positive learning environment
Documents observations and maintains records in compliance with Alberta Education mandates and monitoring expectations
Manages inappropriate behavior, including implementation of physical restraint techniques when required
Provides input to Learning Team meetings
Assists with the implementation of response and safety plans
Prepares classroom material
Demonstrates initiative and independence in the management of class time
Performs physically demanding tasks to meet the unique and personal needs of students
Performs disinfecting and general housekeeping, when required
Assists students during school celebrations, liturgical events, services and attendance at Mass at local parishes
Qualifications
Child and Youth Care Worker Diploma or a Diploma in a related field of study, or
Education Assistant Certificate with demonstrated knowledge, skills and training in behaviour disabilities, or
High School Diploma and 3 years’ experience working with behaviour disabilities students
Experience working with diverse learning students or other severe behavioral needs, e.g., autism
Successful completion of training in non-violent crisis intervention
Ability to deal with the social/emotional and mental health challenges of working with groups of children who are often active and demanding
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Physically able to meet all physical demands for this position (see link)
