Job Description

Major Project: Cariboo Connector – Highway 97 Improvements, Cariboo

English Language Instructor – On call

Program: Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC)

Location: Prince George, BC

Job Summary: Teacher of English as a second language to adult immigrants: under the general direction of the LINC Head Instructor, helps learners develop linguistic and cultural competence to participate fully in Canadian education, work and cultural environments and provide orientation to Canadian customs, systems and norms.

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree and recognized TESL/TESOL certificate from a Canadian institution
  • Knowledge of the application of the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) and experience using Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA)
  • Experience teaching adult ESL learners in a classroom setting
  • Community based, settlement ESL experience an asset
  • Cultural competency and sensitivity, understanding the needs of new immigrants to Canada
  • Applicants must be able to provide proof of proficiency in English at CLB 8 or above in all 4 skills
  • Criminal Record Check required
  • Knowledge of a language other than English will be considered an asset

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver English Language training following the LINC curriculum guidelines to provide life skills and labor market skills to support student’s integration into Canadian society, the local community and the labor market
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) and their application within the language program
  • Evaluate and measure student progress using Portfolio-Based Language assessment (PBLA) as well as a variety of assessment tools and techniques appropriate for the purpose
  • Develop lesson objectives and plans which incorporate task-based settlement language education
  • Provide course content on Canadian services, systems, life and culture based on CLB standards
  • Be aware of local community services appropriate to learners needs
  • Work collaboratively as part of the Language Training Team

Salary Range: $29.01 (as per BCGEU collective agreement)

Current hours of work: Monday to Friday, 9am – 12pm
