About Wolfville Children’s Centre

Wolfville Children’s Centre is a not-for-profit charitable organization overseen and monitored by a volunteer Board of Directors and licensed by the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

The Board includes parents and interested community members, with participation from the assistant and Executive Director. The Board of Directors operates under a policy governance model, where policy development is used to construct limitations within which the Executive Director must operate. The Executive Director is seen as the Board’s sole employee; all Board authority with respect to the staff is delegated through the Executive Director, so that all authority and accountability of staff-as far as the Board is concerned-is the authority and accountability of the Executive Director.

WCC began operation in the Student Union building of Acadia University in 1972. Students with small children organized a parent cooperative to assist each other in continuing their education while raising their families. Shortly after opening, the need for more space and affordable childcare prompted the co-operative to seek a registered charitable status, hire a fully trained staff and recruit board members from within its parent group and the community at large. In 1974, the centre relocated and expanded its services to include infant and school age care along with offering assistance with daily fees through the provincial government. The centre became “property owners” in 2009 and in its present location offers care and education to forty-four (44) children ages 18 months to 5 years in a multi-age (family grouping style) setting. Afterschool care is provided for up to twenty-one (21) children in grades Primary to six in an off-site location on Acadia University campus in the student union building.

To apply Interested candidates are asked to submit a cover letter, resume, and statement of philosophical approach to early childhood education (two pages maximum). The cover letter must state whether the applicant is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada, and specifically addresses why the applicant is qualified for the role.

The selection committee will begin reviewing applications on April 12th and will continue until the successful applicant is selected.

Application documents should be sent in electronic format to [email protected].
