JOB DESCRIPTION – Executive Director, Economic Development

The Organization:
There are currently 17 Bands remaining of the 32 that existed before contact with the settlers, comprising the Secwepemc Nation. Each community has its own symbol that has deep cultural meaning. The Little Shuswap Lake Band (LSLB) is also traditionally known as Skwlax, which translates to Black Bear in Secwépemctsín, the language of the Secwepemc people.

LSLB has unique vision and drive. The Band has not only led the way in tourism within the Shuswap, but it has also led the way in economic development. The creation of Quaaout Lodge, Talking Rock Golf and Le7ka Spa has helped promote Secwepemc culture, and allowed the Little Shuswap Lake people to develop world class accommodation and leisure activities. Strong management and leadership with clear vision and an excellent team of committed employees make up the engine that drives the community forward. LSLB is Financial Management System (FMS) certified by the First Nations Financial Management Board.

We are looking for a leader to continue developing our Nation in the Economic Development Executive Director role here at Little Shuswap Lake Band in Chase, BC. If you are someone who values culture, prosperity, and engagement, we want to hear from you.

The Opportunity: A Day in the life of the Executive Director – Economic Development

Reporting and under the support and supervision provided by Chief & Council, the Executive Director – Economic Development will be involved in creating and implementing a community economic and opportunities plan to facilitate growth of Little Shuswap Lake Band’s members and businesses. This position is responsible for the strategic goals of our Economic Development Sector and successful leadership of the organization according to the vision, objectives and strategic direction set by Council. This individual will help facilitate a board of directors for the Economic Development Sector and act as a catalyst for stakeholder relations. You will:

Create and implement a Community Economic and Opportunities Plan within Little Shuswap Lake Band’s territory for member and Band business benefit

Create an Economic Marketing Brand and Strategy

Assess and provide recommendations to Chief & Council on the rationalization of LSLB’s owned businesses for the economic development of the territory

Develop an Entrepreneurship Engagement and Support Strategy for LSLB’s band members to support growth within the community

Develop a Private and Public Sector Engagement Strategy

Work with Lands Department to ensure that Commercial and Industrial lands identification and designation are prioritized under the Land Use Planning process

Lead Pespesellkwe te Secwepemc Business Table

Assist in sourcing funds and other capacity support for LSLB business, LSLB band member entrepreneurs and business-related opportunities on and off reserve

Liaison and support Economic Development Department managers with Chief & Council

Create and facilitate bi-weekly Economic Development Board of Directors meetings

Identify and engage with economic partners on larger regional projects.

Assert LSLB’s Economic Development stewardship in the region through partnerships including Skwlax Resource Management (SRM)

Collaborate with SRM to fulfill opportunities in the region.

Develop resource-based opportunities for the community.

Expand on current economic operations, providing high level assistance to grow hospitality & Lease lots.

Create Economic Development Funding Plan and Annual Budget

Other duties that may be assigned.

Requirements: What you bring to the organization:
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, Economic Development, or related field.

5+ years’ experience of progressively responsible management experience preferably in the community, social service sector or with Indigenous organizations

Relative Designation in area of expertise

Class 5 Drivers License

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Capability to identify opportunities, establish goals and implement an action plan.

Ability in organization, establishing priorities, and follow-up.

Capacity to adapt to unexpected circumstances and work under pressure.

Ability to manage confidential and sensitive business and client information.

Skill to work independently and in a team environment.

Self-driven, enthusiasm, tactful and diplomatic.
