The mandate of the Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety is to support sustained economic growth and prosperity by fostering a fair and balanced employment environment that respects the rights, duties and responsibilities of employees and employers. The Ministry provides a range of services that encourage, promote and enforce work practices and employment standards to ensure healthy, safe and productive workplaces. The Ministry administers various Acts and Regulations which include: The Saskatchewan Employment Act; The Public Service Essential Services Act; The Employment Standards Regulations; and, The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.

The Ministry is seeking a dynamic, high performing, innovative, values driven leader to join the executive team as Executive Director, Occupational Health and Safety.

Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister, the successful candidate will:

Provide province-wide leadership and direction regarding the promotion and enforcement of occupational health and safety legislation with the goal of eliminating injuries and illnesses in the workplace;

Encourage the adoption of a workplace responsibility system to provide an effective framework for employers and employees to share a commitment to eliminating workplace hazards; and,

Build effective programming through WorkSafe Saskatchewan and other partnerships to tackle the ongoing challenges of Saskatchewan’s unacceptably high injury rate.

Ideal Candidate

Our candidate of choice must be a resilient leader who is able to:

Demonstrate a commitment to excellence in the administration and enforcement of occupational health and safety (OHS) legislation to ensure compliance with legislated standards in order to reduce workplace injuries and illness and will hold a statutory role at appeal levels;

Develop, implement and evaluate multi-disciplinary strategies to advance OHS policies and programs to complement the province’s socio-economic development and will take an active advisory role on how OHS policy and program alternatives may impact on these economic and social initiatives;

Demonstrate extensive senior management experience that enables you to lead, direct and manage a diverse inter-disciplinary team of professionals;

Establish expertise in the areas of strategic planning, including the design and implementation of accountability frameworks, human resource management and financial management; and,

Demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills in order to develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Typically, the knowledge and competencies for this position would have been acquired through:

An educational background in, or equivalent to, a graduate degree in social science or management studies, with knowledge of and experience with OHS in order to effectively communicate and apply OHS principles and strategies in the promotion and enforcement of regulations and standards in a wide variety of workplaces;

Experience in business planning, continuous improvement, accountability processes and risk management; and,

A professional designation of Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or equivalent would be an asset.
