Position: Faculty Lecturer – Indigenous Programming and Community Relations

Launched in 2020, The School of Continuing Studies Indigenous Relations Initiative is part of a broader commitment to reconciliation, and the process of establishing and maintaining a mutually respectful relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. The Indigenous Relations Initiative (IRI) unit is seeking a highly qualified individual who is committed to teaching and supporting our plans for strategic growth and innovation.
Position Description
We are interested in receiving applications from candidates who have a background in Public Administration, Business Management, Education, Educational Psychology, Counseling, Information Technology, Human Resources, Indigenous Studies, Accounting, Social Sciences, or a related field. Teaching excellence, expertise in fostering active learning and inclusive environments, and experience in coordinating tailored courses for an Indigenous audience are strongly sought qualities, as are teaching online/remotely.
This is a full-time, ranked academic, non-tenure-track position with an initial appointment of two (2) years, reporting to the Associate Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs, through the Director of Indigenous Relations Initiative. The desired start date is June 1, 2021.
Job Duties
Under the direct supervision of the IRI Director, successful applicants will teach one or more courses from our undergraduate and/or graduate programs offered at SCS. Successful applicants will also assume key administrative and leadership roles in the unit.
Representative responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Teach up to the equivalent of 12 credits per academic year (undergraduate and/or graduate level, credit and/or non-credit professional courses)—actual course load will depend on the scope of academic administrative responsibilities/special projects as determined in consultation with the IRI Director and the Dean’s office;
Oversee the academic content of the tailored credit programs designed for Indigenous community partners;
Assume primary responsibility for maintaining the academic rigour of these courses, including ensuring that pedagogical methods are up to date;
Provide leadership and guidance to Course Lecturers in best practices in teaching, course design, and assessment for an Indigenous audience, including holding regular teaching-team meetings;
Ensure that policies, guidelines, expectations, and procedures are clearly communicated to Course Lecturers;
Review course evaluations of part-time Course Lecturers and provide feedback and guidance to individual instructors;
Work productively with IRI and SCS administrative staff to schedule programming;
Develop and maintain fruitful working relationships with the University’s Faculties and Schools and with key University service units;
Ensure that policies, guidelines, expectations, and procedures are clearly communicated to Course Lecturers;
Liaise with the marketing department to determine appropriateness of materials for an Indigenous audience;
Build, nurture, and maintain client relations and ensure a high level of customer service and professionalism at all times;
Serve on the IRI’s departmental committee;
Serve on SCS and University committees and workgroups as needed and available;
Participate in IRI, SCS, and University orientation and promotional events.
Education/Experience Required
Graduate degree (PhD preferred) in either:
Public Administration, Business Management, Education, Educational Psychology, Counseling, Information Technology, Human Resources, Indigenous Studies, Social Sciences, or a related field.
Minimum of two (2) years of current and professional experience in the public, business or not for profit sector;
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
Preference will be given to candidates whose work is grounded in Indigenous perspectives as informed by their personal familiarity and/or professional experience with/in Indigenous communities, organizations, and institutions.
Teaching experience in post-secondary or higher education.
Strong written and oral communication skills in English; knowledge of French is a plus.
Oral communication in Mohawk, Inuktitut, Cree, or any other First Nations or Inuit language is preferred.
Experience with program or course development and delivery.
Demonstrated skills in educational needs assessment and all aspects of program development and delivery.
Demonstrated ability to use a variety of educational technologies to support program delivery and student learning.
Demonstrated organizational and leadership skills.
Demonstrated commitment to staying abreast of research and advances in the relevant area of specialization.
Excellent interpersonal, time-management, and organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to prepare and write grant reports.
Demonstrated abilities in building and leading teams.
Commitment to the values of university continuing education.
