The New Westminster Fire and Rescue Service has up to three permanent full time vacancies for qualified Fire Inspectors. Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Fire Chief, the Fire Inspector will be responsible for specialized technical, investigational and educational work in the application and enforcement of Municipal, Provincial and Federal, fire prevention by-laws, regulations and codes. This work involves inspection of residential occupancies, business and personal services occupancies, mercantile occupancies and simple assembly occupancies. As education and training requirements are successfully completed, all types of public and private buildings and structures will be inspected to ensure compliance with fire prevention regulations. Depending on the incumbent’s current qualifications, opportunities exist to be trained in the delivery of informational and educational programs for public, commercial and industrial concerns dealing with fire safety and prevention and emergency preparedness. In addition, there are also opportunities to be trained in assisting with investigating fires to determine cause and origin, at times outside of normal hours of work due to emergency callouts. Finally, you will assist with the development and delivery of in-house training to NWFRS personnel. This work will also include outreach to community groups and other departments within the City. Limited independence of judgment and action is exercised as duties are carried out within defined departmental procedures and as directed.
Minimum Requirements
- Knowledge of fire prevention, inspection and investigation methods, procedures, by-laws, codes, statutes and regulations.
- Knowledge of building construction, mechanical and structural components, wiring, and industrial processes including chemical reactions, flammable, combustible materials and liquids.
- Understanding of the BC Fire Services Act, relating to fire prevention investigations, responsibilities, liabilities of the LAFC and obligations of the City of New Westminster.
- Demonstrated experience in community outreach and public education programs and ability to stimulate interest and cooperation in fire prevention and safety programs through public speaking, demonstrations and related activities.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to employ exceptional customer service skills.
- Strong proficiency in written communications and administrative work.
- Excellent report writing skills.
- Ability to effectively use industry standard PC applications and software.
- Ability to read, understand and interpret building plans, blueprints and specifications.
- Valid Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia with a clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
- BCIT or equivalent Fire Alarm Systems: Inspection & Testing
- BC Fire Code Certificate.
- BC Building Code Part 3.
- Fire Investigation – Fire Cause & Origin Levels 1 and 2.
- NFPA 1035 Fire & Life Safety Educator
- NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector Level 1
- Fire Service Instructor 1 and 2
- Minimum 2 year experience in fire service, public education and/or firefighting
- Experience in using FDM Records Management, Tempest, and GIS applications
- Building and construction inspection experience
- Completion of a Conflict resolution skills course or training program.
