This is a Full Time Permanent position. Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities. The regular hours of work are 6:00 am to 2:00 pm, Monday to Friday. This includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break.
The Salvation Army Hamilton Booth Centre Food Services Manager is responsible for menu planning and preparation (ensuring safe handling of food and meeting nutritional needs of the clients), inventory control, and service enhancement. The incumbent is responsible for the direct supervision of the kitchen staff including all Cooks, Kitchen Helpers and Volunteers within established guidelines.
This position is considered a management position for the purposes of the Employment Standards Act of Ontario and as such is not covered by various ESA rules, including but not limited to those related to hours of work, daily and weekly rest periods and overtime compensation. Salary is based on average minimum 40 hours per week. Hours worked are compensated through the annual salary amount.
Normal location of work is at 94 York Blvd, Hamilton, ON.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Production of balanced, visually appealing meals economically by using food donations whenever possible in addition to cost effective food ordering from the various suppliers.
- Responsible for the preparation of the menu, ordering and monitoring of food and kitchen supplies.
- Ensure the appropriate storage and usage of food items and other provisions, ensuring that perishable items are used prior to their expiry date to ensure that waste is kept to a minimum.
- Ensure that all food stocks for the Community Response Vehicle (Soup Van) are prepared and stored in an appropriate manner each day.
- Prepare luncheons etc. as necessary to accommodate visits, etc.
- Ensure that all staff and volunteers assigned to the kitchen adhere to all fire, health and safety standards pertaining to kitchen and other areas of the Centre.
- Official contact in Food Services for all trades people, Salvation Army auditors, public health inspectors and other community representatives.
- Ensure all staff and volunteers assigned to kitchen adhere to proper standards of hygiene and safe handling of food while performing their duties.
- Ensure the cleanliness / sanitation of all work areas and tools in the kitchen (e.g., fridges, stoves, freezers, meat slicer, etc.) plus storage and dining rooms.
- Ensure that all tools and appliances are inspected daily to ensure cleanliness and safety and that all deficiencies are reported immediately to the Director of Environmental Services.
- Supervise, direct, and instruct cooks, kitchen helpers, and volunteers in all aspects of their job responsibilities.
- Prepare, post, and maintain all departmental staff work schedules for those supervised in accordance with collective agreement and ESA standards.
- Assist the Director of Environmental Services in scheduling and chairing staff meetings.
- Complete payroll supervisory functions in UltiPro inclusive of approving vacation, sick time, timesheets, etc. for staff.
- Plan and provide on the job training and development of all cooks regarding menu, meal presentation, and delivery.
- Ensure that all staff and volunteers assigned to kitchen treat all Clients with respect and dignity and in a fair and equitable manner.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Completion of a Food Services Management Diploma and Red Seal endorsement.
- Safe Food Handling Certificate.
- First Aid & CPR and Non-violent Crisis Intervention Certificates or willingness to abtain.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Minimum of 2 years of prior related experience in cooking and planning menus for a commercial kitchen. Experience working in social service residential facilities preferred.
- Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
- Ability to establish and implement goals for self and staff to meet training needs, the dietary needs of clients and cleanliness, health and safety standards for food preparation/service areas.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills.
- Ability to use the internet and email with knowledge of Microsoft Office and Excel.
- Strong organizational, time management and planning skills.
- Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
