Description
To assist in the operations of collecting and processing donations to the Vernon Salvation Army, practicing good stewardship of our donated resources.
Hours:
- Full-Time – 37. 5 hours per week.
- Monday to Friday. Maximum twelve-week temporary position.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This job assists in many different areas and job duties will flex daily. This list is not a daily task list, but instead a compilation of duties that may occur over the course of the temporary job.
At the Reception Desk
- Interact with the public both, face to face and on the phone
- Respond appropriately to challenging individuals – will have proper training
- Operate a database
In the Warehousing Department
- Build food hampers
- Cooperate and communicate with, and direct, food bank volunteers in the sorting and organizing of food and non-food items.
- Store food safely (i.e. according to a proper minimum and maximum temperatures of cooler and freezer).
- Make daily temperature record reading and record accordingly
- Help with warehouse organization, hamper distribution, and communication with other receiving agencies.
- Lift and move heavy boxes of food
With Food Donation Pickups – depending on the season
- May assist staff with Farmers Market vendors in receiving close-dated food (which will no longer sell)
- May assist the truck driver with The Salvation Army’s cube van (truck) to pick up the product from the Farmers Market and/or grocery stores and deliver it to the food bank
- May assist with coordinating receiving, inventorying, proper storage, and distribution of such food items.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Certifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- We will also consider relevant life experience
Required Skills/Knowledge:
- An understanding of and support for the Mission Statement of the Salvation Army in Canada
- Excellent customer/donor service ethics including the ability to deal with the public in a friendly manner
- A proven ability to work in a team setting as well as a willingness to take personal initiatives
- The ability to adapt to change and interruptions to a normal work routine, and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- The ability to maintain confidentiality.
- A willingness to adhere to a dress code of modesty, neatness and cleanliness
- Demonstrate excellent people & communication skills – verbal & written
- Demonstrate excellent organizational skills
- Display ability to energetically, positively, and effectively direct and take direction
- Demonstrate basic computer skills
- The successful applicant must have, or be willing to obtain, a criminal record check, clearance from the National Abuse Registry, and be bondable
Preferred Skills / Capabilities:
- A valid BC class “5” license with appropriate certification and proof of clean driver’s abstract (but is not necessary to have a license to successfully be awarded this job).
Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:
- Background check consent.
- A clear vulnerable sector screening.
- Clean drivers abstract.
- Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training.
