Position Purpose summary:
As a local expression of The Salvation Army in Canada, Broadview Village has 40+ years of providing outstanding support to adults with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges. Broadview Village residences and community day programs provide support to individuals with developmental disabilities and/or mental health challenges and we are currently hiring a Chaplain. This position reports to the Director of Spiritual and Religious Care. This is a full-time position and works 40 hours per week, flexible to meet program needs including some evenings and weekends. Location and scheduling assignments may change based on organizational and programmatic needs.
This position requires someone who has a passion for creatively providing spiritual and religious care to people with a variety of abilities, comprehension levels, and methods of communication. The capacity to work collaboratively within a team is required, as well as with a large number of stakeholders including: front-line staff, healthcare professionals, colleagues, community members, family members and friends.
The Chaplain must ensure that their activities are in compliance with established legislation, and policies and procedures including: Employment Standards; Occupational Health & Safety Standards; Collective Agreements; Payroll Procedures; Salvation Army Accreditation; and Services and Supports to Promote the Social Inclusion of Persons with Developmental Disabilities Act, 2008 (SIPDDA).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To actively promote the Gospel of Jesus Christ to staff and residents and participants by providing spiritual leadership, Christian counselling and by modeling the Christian faith in all interactions
- To ensure residents receive counselling and support services commensurate with their needs and the available resources
- To arrange Bible studies/lessons, devotions, special services and prayer meetings for interested residents/participants, staff, families, and community members
- To assist in development of a program plan for spiritual care at Broadview Village
- To assist in setting goals and objectives for spiritual care for those with in the scope of Broadview
- To perform pastoral visitation to residents, staff and family members
- To provide crisis support and Christian counselling to residents, staff and family members as requested
- To obtain and distribute Bibles, Christian literature, and publications
- To assess the spiritual needs of individuals seeking spiritual guidance
- To support the residents’ attendance or participation at Church or other faith community when desired by the residents
- To provide a ministry of presence through regular interaction with residents/participants and staff
- To participate in Individual Program Support Meetings of the residents where possible. If it is not possible to attend, the Chaplain will provide input into the ISP process.
- To document pastoral care services, including individual files for residents, and records of visits, spiritual decisions made, and special ceremonies
- To ensure that residents, staff and family are aware of all aspects of the chaplaincy program
- To advocate and build awareness of individual spiritual needs throughout agency
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education/Certifications:
- Theological education at a recognized educational body
- Chaplaincy education at a recognized educational body
- Valid Standard First Aid Certificate with CPR, Level C
- Ability to achieve Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certificate upon hire
Required Skills/Knowledge:
- Training or education for working with people with disabilities or mental health challenges
Successful candidate will be required to provide upon hiring:
- A clear vulnerable sector screening completed no less than 2 months prior to date of hire
- Participate in our online Armatus Abuse Training and Health and Safety training required upon hiring, as well as updated annually
HOURS: 40 hours per week, including evenings and/or weekends and chaplain on-call rotation flexible to meet program needs. Overtime may occasionally be required
