Description
Provide emotional & spiritual care, practical assistance, information, and relevant programming to people in custody, with court matters or attending court, and all staff in courthouses in the Greater Toronto Area. Maintain a prominent and positive profile for the broad ministry of The Salvation Army and its Correctional & Justice Services and support the broader chaplaincy team.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Pastoral Care & Programming:
- Provide spiritual and religious care, moral, emotional and practical support, and life-change programming to accused persons, their families, victims, witnesses, and court personnel
- Ensure appropriate records are maintained
Court Ministry and Responsibilities
- Be visible, available and demonstrate compassion in holding cells, courtrooms, and court waiting areas, and proactive to seek out people in court who may need assistance or need information.
- Be always ready to pray with and for people and offer SA offices as a sacred space.
- Maintain inventory of appropriate clothing and obtain clothing from Thrift Stores.
- Facilitate the Positive Lifestyle Program in-person and online, lead Bible studies, discussion groups, pastoral counseling sessions and other approved programming as required.
- Participate in specialty courts as requested (Drug Treatment, Youth, Family, Mental Health etc.)
- Develop a volunteer program; recruit, train, and supervise Salvation Army court volunteers and students.
Chaplain’s Organizational Responsibilities to The Salvation Army:
- Direct matters regarding government contacts to Director of Chaplaincy
- Know all relevant policies, procedures and programs of the institution and The Salvation Army
- Accept speaking engagements on Correctional & Justice Services as requested.
- Wear Salvation Army uniform or branded clothing.
- Supervise, train, provide orientation for Salvation Army volunteers as required.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain appropriate chaplaincy records and statistics (spiritual care intake, inmate records etc.)
- Attend The Salvation Army Correctional & Justice Services staff meetings and other meetings, workshops, training and conferences, as requested.
- Maintain inventory of appropriate clothing and obtain clothing from Thrift Stores as needed or clothing drives.
Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Completion of a recognized chaplaincy or spiritual care education program (e.g. The Salvation Army Certificate of Chaplaincy, Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or equivalent)
- Theological training
- Certification by the Ontario Multi-Faith Council on Spiritual and Religious Care an asset
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
- 2 years’ experience in spiritual care ministry
- Public speaking and program delivery experience
- Previous Bible study and chapel leadership
SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:
- Conduct spiritual care assessments and providing spiritual care ministry
- Has a friendly outgoing personality and is able to pray with people
- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality, and excellent people and listening skills
- Possesses effective oral and written communication skills, and effective interpersonal skills to assist people in crisis
- Commitment to The Salvation Army mission and values and demonstrated ability to apply them in all aspects of chaplaincy.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Office & Teams and competent computer skills.
- Obtain Vulnerable Sector Search and institutional security clearance
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
- Travel to various Greater Toronto Area courthouses
PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:
- Knowledge of and experience in Christian-based interviewing and counseling skills, other faith groups beliefs and practices.
- Knowledge of community resources and supports.
