Description
The Cook prepares and serves nutritious meals as outlined on menus and in accordance with Canada Food Guide and safe food handling.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Key Responsibilities:
- Keep kitchen and pantry in good order and in compliance with Fire / Health and Building codes
- Ensure proper nutritional guidelines are observed as per the Canada Food Guide
- Prepare and serve meals, and prepare for special dietary needs
- Keep record of meal preparation and delivery
- Follow and ensure guidelines for safety and security in the kitchen and during meal preparation
- Monitor & control food consumption
- Maintain record of all meals
- Shop for food supplies
- Maintain budget
- Conduct comparison-shopping
- Provide receipts
- Keep an up to date inventory of food supplies
- Rotate food stocks
- Ensure food storage areas i.e. pantry, are clean and in good order
- Keep an inventory of all kitchen equipment such as small appliances, utensils and especially sharps
- Bring any concerns immediately to the attention of staff in charge as well as Assistant Director and Director
- Report any damages to staff in charge as well as Assistant Director and or Director
- Supervise clients’ activities in the kitchen work areas as well as clients you take into the community (i.e. grocery shopping days)
- Provide supervision of clients assigned to “clean up” routines in kitchen pantry and dining area
- Assist program staff in teaching residents basic food preparation skills
- Review menus and maintain kitchen inventory
- Complete Sundry duties for required housekeeping and maintenance duties in the facility
- Support the Salvation Army Correctional & Justice Services Cuthbert House Mission statement
- Comply with policy and procedures as outlined in The Youth Criminal Justice Act, Cuthbert House’s policy and procedure manual, The Ministry of Children, Community & Social Services Standards and Guidelines and Operational Policy and Procedure manuals
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma
- Safe Food Handling certificate
- Valid First Aid/CPR
Experience:
- Minimum 1 year job related experience preferred
Required Skills/Knowledge:
- Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada
- Possess a positive attitude and works well with other team members
- Self-motivated and disciplined
- Good communication skills (verbal and written) in English
- Possess good knowledge of nutrition and safe food handling
- To maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to clientele and staff of The Salvation Army
PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:
- Valid Driver’s License, an asset
Successful candidate will be required to provide upon hiring:
- A clear vulnerable sector screening
- A clean drivers abstract
- Participate in our online Armatus Abuse Training and Health and Safety training required upon hiring, as well as updated annually
HOURS: 28 hours per week
