KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Client Services:
- In an efficient, client focused, kind and safe manner, assist clients with the provision of activities of daily living as required, including bathing, meal, washroom, mobility assistance etc.
- While ensuring dignity & safety, provide whirlpool baths as scheduled and maintain accurate monthly bathing record.
- Assist or facilitate as required the safe arrival and departure of participants.
- Monitor, supervise, and support clients and the environment to ensure safety.
- Lift and transfer clients using mechanical or physical means according to established protocol.
- Assist clients with mobility as required to ensure safety.
- In accordance with Safe Food Handling principles, prepare and serve snacks, lunch and nourishments which meet the client’s individual dietary requirements for safety and preference and as directed by the Community Nurse.
- Take active measures to ensure a pleasant participant dining experience by setting the environment and employing a strong customer service focus during interactions.
- Implement temperature control measures by testing, monitoring, and documenting temperature readings related to safe food handling/storage and infection prevention and control measures, reporting all concerns to Program Supervisor.
- Remain cognizant and informed of infection prevention and control measures and abide by all applicable policy in the achievement of a healthy environment.
- Respond calmly and professionally in emergency situations and assist as directed; implement First Aid Training and Gentle Persuasion Approach/Non-Violent Crisis & Prevention Training when required.
- Assist the Community Nurse with client health assessments.
- When required, facilitate pre-planned recreational activities for program participants in partnership with the Recreation Team in a positive and engaging manner.
Communication/Administration:
- Maintain accurate documentation and records.
- Report any actual or potential problems/situations/particular needs to the Program Supervisor or designate.
- Report any property damage, mechanical breakdown of equipment and/or repairs needed in the program as per policy.
- Complete and submit detailed incident reports.
- Monitor and respond to internal email correspondence regularly.
- Participate in the development of departmental policies and procedures.
Human Resources:
- Provide support and direction to part-time and/or casual/relief staff.
- Provide training, mentoring and orientation to new staff, volunteers, students.
- Identify professional development opportunities to enhance the manner in which services can be delivered.
Health & Safety
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with all COVID-19 protocols and requirements.
- Work in compliance with the Ontario Health & Safety Act and Regulations, use personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer, report workplace hazards, dangers, injuries or illness, work in a manner as required by the employer, and report workplace injuries or illness.
- Responsible to follow through on all safety and security procedures (including fire) as outlined in the policy and procedures manual.
- Maintain sanitation and proper health, and safety standards of hygiene while performing duties.
Perform other duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a permanent full-time position based 32.5 hours per week.
- Flexibility in scheduling is required to meet program requirements; schedule including days, evenings, and weekends.
- The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.
- Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs. and apply effective body mechanics and meet the physical demands of the position.
- Frequent lifting, twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, pushing, and pulling, walking, and standing for long period; some kneeling, running may be required.
- Travel is associated with this job.
Normal hours of work: rotational work schedule will be set by your Supervisor as per program hours of operation, Monday to Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and include a 1/2 hour paid meal break where applicable.
Normal location of work: 1340 Dundas Street, London ON N5W 3B6
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Completed Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) is required.
- Personal Support Worker Certificate is required; currently registered with the Ontario PSW Registry.
- Current Standard First Aid & CPR Certification and current Safe Food Handling Certification.
- Montessori for Dementia Care certificate would be an asset.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Minimum of two (2) years of prior work experience working with cognitively impaired/frail elderly populations
- Current Gentle Persuasive Approach training and/or Non- Violent Crisis & Prevention training (NVCI)
- U-First Training would be an asset.

- Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills and respect authority.

- Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability; attention to detail and analytical skills.
- Lead by example, by demonstrating a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible in the face of change to meet community expectations & funding obligations.
- Fluent French verbal and written communication skills are an asset.
- Proficiency in all Microsoft Office products is required – i.e., Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Internet; ability to successfully interact with iPads/tablets and Smart Boards.
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, own vehicle/insurance, and a current original copy of driver’s abstract, which is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion is required.
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
