        Responsibilities
        
                        Position Purpose Summary:
Boundless Vancouver Community Ministries organizes The Salvation Army Boundless Vancouver Christmas Toy Shop for children and families. The Christmas Volunteer & Donation Coordinator works with our Boundless Vancouver team to organize our volunteers and coordinate donations for The Christmas Toy Shop and the Christmas Luncheon.
BASIC FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Volunteer Coordination: 

Works in conjunction with and in support of The Christmas Toy Shop by identifying and promoting volunteer opportunities
Recruit, screen, register & orient appropriate volunteers to fill positions
Process necessary paperwork, including Criminal Record Checks and volunteer agreement packages
Deploy volunteers to positions relevant to their interests and skills
Help orientate and supervise volunteers while they are deployed to their positions
Keep thorough records of volunteer information and hours of service for statistical purposes

Donation Coordination: 

Work in conjunction with and in support of the Christmas campaigns, identifying the financial and in-kind donation needs for Christmas distribution
Solicit financial and in-kind donations and correspond in a timely manner with individuals and corporate donors in the community; organize toy drives with companies and organizations in the community
Coordinate drop-off and pick up schedule with donors and driver(s)
Help coordinate with divisional Public Relations team for the Toy Mountain event
Relay donated items to the appropriate personnel for proper storage and distribution
Keep thorough records of donor information and donated items/amounts & maintain a positive relationship with our donors
Perform other duties as assigned

 
                    
                

        Qualifications
        
                        Education/Certifications:

Post-secondary education and work experience in fund-raising, donor relations, public relations

Experience:

One (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience, including experience working in customer service related fields

Required Skills/Knowledge:

Excellent organizational skills
Superior relationship building skills and the ability to interact with individuals at all levels in a confident, collaborative and professional manner
Proven ability to multitask
Be able to work independently; demonstrated self-starter and team player
Excellent verbal communication skills in person and on the phone
Excellent written communication skills
Proficient computer skills and familiarity with Google Suite and Microsoft Office
Ability to learn new software quickly and teach others
Be able to lift up to 30 lbs

Description

The Recreation Coordinator I is responsible to create, facilitate, maintain & evaluate high quality age appropriate therapeutic recreational, social, educational, and special events programming suitable for varying interests, cognitive abilities, and care needs for seniors in person and/or virtually through group program interventions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clients Services:

  • Perform assessments to identify clients’ current leisure/recreational interests and establish ability to participate in activities that will enhance quality of life and respond to the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual well-being of clients.
  • Develop innovative programing which address all therapeutic recreation domains (psychological, emotional, social/leisure, physical and spiritual) to ensure a variety of program offerings across a variety of modalities (in person and remotely/virtually) and ensure programming continues to adapt and respond to client’s changing needs, interests, and goals.
  • Responsible for the creation of detailed implementation plans which serve to outline the manner in which each activity is to be facilitated.
  • Engage clients in small and large group opportunities, which correspond to the identified leisure needs, interests, and the physical and cognitive abilities of clients.
  • Identify, develop, implement, and monitor individual assistive/augmentative communication strategies to encourage full participation in activities and programming.
  • Directly oversee and observe facilitation of planned activities and solicit feedback to ensure the effectiveness of the program schedule and implementation plans.
  • Actively participate in the client reassessment and in partnership with all relevant stakeholders, establish individual service goals for clients, identify objectives and interventions
  • Assist or facilitate as required with the safe arrival and departure of clients.
  • Participates in the development of program standards as stated in the Salvation Army Manual for Accreditation.
  • Respond calmly and professionally in emergency situations and assist as directed; implement First Aid Training and Gentle Persuasion Approach/Non-Violent Crisis & Prevention Training when required.
  • In accordance with Safe Food Handling principles, prepare and serve snacks, lunch and nourishments which meet the client’s individual dietary requirements for safety and preference.
  • Take active measures to ensure a pleasant participant experience by setting the environment and employing a strong customer service focus during interactions.
  • Implement temperature control measures by testing, monitoring, and documenting temperature readings related to safe food handling/storage and infection prevention and control measures, reporting all concerns to Program Supervisor.
  • Remain cognizant and informed of infection prevention and control measures and abide by all applicable policy in the achievement of a healthy environment.
  • Ensure all necessary arrangements and required documentation is completed for assigned programs.
  • Monitors each client for ongoing changes in health and abilities and reports concerns to the Community Nurse and Program Supervisor following established processes.

Human Resources:

  • Provides support and direction to full-time, part-time, casual/relief, volunteers, and students.
  • Demonstrates well-developed and effective group leadership skills in a small or large group function/setting
  • Assist with individual orientation and tour with new clients
  • Assist clients with Activities of Daily Living while in the program

Communication & Administration:

  • Effectively use a variety of technological resources as a tool in the delivery of recreational programs/activities (including iPads/tablets, smart televisions, smart boards, etc.)
  • Prepare and present Daily Schedule to team, detailing actions and timelines for the day; maintain accurate documentation and records.
  • Produce and distribute monthly newsletter, recreation calendar and virtual services schedule for the program
  • Take the lead on special project management as assigned by the Program Supervisor or Program Director.
  • Liaise with Day Care and Respite staff to coordinate intergenerational and London Village wide programs.
  • Liaise with and schedule program entertainment ensuring appropriate documentation, receipts, and payment for services.
  • Gather data, maintain statistics, and compile information for reports as required; develop and maintain an up- to- date resource files.
  • Report any actual or potential problems/situations/particular needs to the Program Supervisor or designate.
  • Complete and submit detailed incident reports within the established timeframes.
  • Participate in the development of departmental policies and procedures.

Perform other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a permanent full-time position based on 37.5 hours per week.
  • The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required to meet program need; schedule includes days, evenings, and weekends
  • Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs. and apply effective body mechanics and meet the physical demands of the position.
  • Frequent lifting, twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, pushing, and pulling, walking, and standing for long period; some kneeling, running may be required.
  • Travel is associated with this position.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of a College Diploma in Therapeutic Recreation, or related area of study.
  • Fluent French verbal and written communication skills preferred.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, own vehicle/insurance, and a current original copy of driver’s abstract, which is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion is required.
  • Current Standard First Aid & CPR Certification and current Safe Food Handling Certification.
  • Certified in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention would be an asset.
  • NOTE: Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior work experience working with cognitively impaired/frail elderly populations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in facilitating virtual recreation programming with clients.
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office products is required – i.e., Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Internet; ability to successfully interact with iPads/tablets and Smart Boards.
  • Current Gentle Persuasive Approach training and/or Non- Violent Crisis & Prevention training (NVCI).
  • Tiered Exercise Program Facilitator or Home Support Exercise Facilitator Certification would be an asset.
  • Montessori for Dementia Care Certification, U-First Training and R/TRO or R/TRO DIP designation would be assets.
  • Musical skills are an asset

  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate effective working relationships within a team environment and a willingness to work collaboratively with other staff, volunteers, and members of the London Village.
