HEAD OF RESIDENCE
Under the leadership of the Artistic Director/CEO, the Head of Residence will manage the operations of Residence with the
objective of creating an equitable, emotionally supportive, positive, home-like environment for all Residence students. The Head of
Residence is responsible for the safety, health and activities of approximately 100 students living at NBS’ Residence. The Head of
Residence also participates as a member of the senior management of NBS, in policy and strategic planning.
The Head of Residence is responsible for all elements of Residence life. The position encompasses supervision of all Residence
staff including Team Leaders, Residence Counsellors, Administrative and Housekeeping staff.
All NBS managers are responsible to actively champion equity, diversity and inclusion principles and initiatives in their functional
area and across the School.
Major Duties and Responsibilities (in concert with the Academic Principal):
- Establish a compassionate and nurturing environment for students by providing emotional and psychological support
- Manage Residence staff and accomplish department results
- Achieve financial objectives by forecasting requirements, preparing a budget; managing expenditures
- Work with Residence Counsellors to develop, plan, and co-ordinate Residence activities
- Support the effective operation of NBS’ Residence by establishing and reviewing policies and procedures, rules and
routines
- Protect students and staff by maintaining procedures for keeping the student data base current including the recording of
health-related information, medications, administration and storage procedures, medical appointments, and student
expense accounts
- Support the interface between the Academic, Artistic, and Residence programs
- Work with the Artistic Director, Nutritionist, Food Services Manager and Artistic Health Department staff with regard to food
allergies, individual nutrition, schedule changes, etc.
- Oversee the development of a comprehensive student activities program, with a particular focus on the weekend activities
and events
- Assist with the revision of the Student Handbook annually based on policy and program changes
- Ensure that the Residence is safe, secure and clean by developing, implementing and maintaining a comprehensive safety
and security program, liaising with the Facilities Department with regard to housekeeping, maintenance and repairs; staff
training with regard to safety rules and regulations for activities on- and off-site
Qualifications/Skills/Experience:
- Relevant bachelor’s degree in Education, Child Youth Worker, Social Work, Child Studies or equivalent (master’s degree
preferred)
- Minimum 5 years’ experience managing a Residence for students
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of applicable childcare legislation
- Good knowledge of the applicable sections of the Young Offender’s Act and Public Health Act as they impact on the
operation of a Residence school
- Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills; complemented by considerable discretion, diplomacy and
confidentiality to effectively manage communications with parents, medical professionals and staff
- Highly developed conceptual, analytical, and problem solving skills; with the ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and
handle a high volume of work
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word and Excel, and PowerPoint) Google Applications and Internet
Successful candidates must supply Canada’s National Ballet School with a Vulnerable Sector Police Reference Check, in
accordance with the School’s Child Abuse/Sexual Abuse Prevention Policy; this will be coordinated through the Human Resources
Department of NBS.
