Headstart Teacher and/or Early Child Development Worker

We are seeking an experienced RECE interested in working in either or both roles as: (1) Headstart Teacher and/or (2) Early Child Development Worker/EarlyON to work as a member of the Annavale Nursery School and/or the EarlyON team to deliver quality early years programs to children and their families.

This experienced RECE will deliver services that stimulate healthy child development and support healthy parent/caregivers – child relationships. They will also deliver programs that align with provincial guidelines and best practices for early years programming as described in the How Does Learning Happen? Framework, as well as the Childcare and Early Years Act 2014,and meet all health and safety standards.

Program-related activities include but are not limited to –

Headstart Context – Under COVID19 directives

Provides a stimulating, welcoming, and safe learning environment for groups of infants, toddlers, and/or pre-schoolers, in alignment with ELECT and How Does learning Happen? principles.

Plans and implements developmentally-appropriate emergent curriculum and activities for groups of children.

Leads all activities and transitions to ensure smooth running of the program, including circle time, mealtime, nap time routines (setting up, cleaning up tables, putting away dishes, sweeping floors, setting up and putting away cots and supervising children during nap time).

Responds to children’s needs in a manner that support positive relationships and social emotional growth, using attachment theory principles.

Informally assesses each child’s physical, social, emotional and cognitive and language learning needs and plans activities to address both group and individual needs.

Identifies children with special needs or learning challenges and makes appropriate referrals in consultation with the Headstart Team (e.g. to speech-language pathologist and family support community worker) and implements any recommendations by the specialist in consultation with the parents.

EarlyON context – Under COVID19 directives

Delivers quality playgroups that support child well-being and development and align with the How does Learning Happen? Framework.

Implements daily program activities to ensure smooth running of the program, including circle time, snacks time, room set up and take down.

Collaborates with EarlyON team to uphold quality and safety standards for playgroup programs.

Models appropriate interactions with parents/caregivers and children by engaging in developmentally appropriate activities

Support parents/caregivers with appropriate behavior management via modeling when needed;

Provides group-based and one on one parenting support/education that promotes responsive parenting, emphasizes the importance of attachment, and builds parenting confidence.

Education and Training

Must be a Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE), in good standing.

Professional Experience

3 to 5 years experience working in Early Childhood/playgroup drop-in settings with children ages zero to six years, and/or experience working in a licensed childcare environment.

Strong knowledge of child development and behaviour management, consistent with the foundations of Early Childhood Education .

Understanding of attachment and trauma-informed care.

Familiarity with the How Does Learning Happen? Framework and Childcare and Early Years Act.

Key Competencies

Experience in a non-profit, community-based organization.

Cross-cultural awareness and experience working with culturally diverse populations essential.

Commitment to the healthy development of children and support of vulnerable families.

Understanding of issues relevant to working with low-income (multi-risks) parents/caregivers.

Ability to communicate effectively and establish appropriate relationships with children, families and caregivers.

Ability to supervise children and/or engage with children and their families in a manner consistent with the goals and philosophy of the program and the community health centre.

Familiarity with the use of computers and/or tablets.

Linguistic Profile

This position is not designated under Carlington’s French Language Services Plan.

Fluency in English is essential.

French/English bilingualism is preferred.

A third language relevant to our client population is an asset.
