Hematopathologist

The Department of Laboratory Medicine, Pathology and Medical Genetics of Island Health, is seeking a hematopathologist. This new position is full-time and the primary practice site is in Nanaimo. There is close practice integration with hospitals across our Health Authority and Campbell River and Comox sites primarily.

The Hematopathology Laboratory Service in Island Health consists of a network of three major hospital-based hematology and transfusion medicine laboratories and five community hospitals that together serve an island population of more than 750,000 with the Hematology and Transfusion Medicine Laboratories at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC, as the regional reference center. The service is defined by “core labs” and supporting analytical procedures in the areas of wet hematology, cellular hematology, coagulation, hemoglobinopathies, immunology, flow cytometry, immunohematology and the distribution of blood and blood products. The successful physician will be team oriented and join four other Hematopathologists in providing diagnostic laboratory oversight and participate fully in the island-wide routine and special hematology services and transfusion medicine programs, teaching rounds, committee work, administrative tasks and consultations to clinicians in all areas relating to diagnosis, management and therapeutic choices.

Travel between sites to provide facility and physician in-services and support is expected. Vancouver Island is home to the Island Medical Program, a satellite of the University of British Columbia and there will be an opportunity for faculty appointment, academic program delivery and clinical research for the appropriate candidate.

You must be eligible for both Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification in Hematopathology and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. This position is available immediately subject to availability of successful candidate.
