Purpose : Reporting to the Principal of Quw’utsun Smun’eem Elementary School, the Hul’q’umi’num’ Language and Culture Teacher will be responsible for providing cultural learning opportunities consistent with Cowichan Tribes’ expectations. This is a 27.5 hours per week fulltime position for the 2021/2022 school calendar year and will be renewed on a annual basis subject to funding.

Responsibilities:
Provide leadership in the integration of Cowichan culture, values and language in classroom activities

Deliver Hul’q’umi’num’ lesson plans as per Quw’utsun Syuw’entst language and culture curriculum

Instruct and deliver artistic expressions of Cowichan Tribes including visual art, dance, and music

Able to work with special needs students and support staff with a focus on differentiated instruction in the classroom

Demonstrate strong interpersonal, communication and collaborative skills and proven ability to work co-operatively and effectively with other educators in a collegial team setting

Required Education and Experience : (please attach all corresponding documents)

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
Recent success as an elementary classroom teacher of First Nation learners

A strong commitment to positive and consistent engagement and communication with parents and other stakeholders

A classroom management style that focuses on structure, mutual respect, natural consequences, consistency and positive reinforcement

First Nations Language Teacher’s Certificate of Qualification or Bachelor of Education Degree

Member of the Ministry of Education Teacher Regulation Branch or willingness to obtain TRB certification through the Language Authority process

Experience teaching and planning with an inquiry-based, student-centered approach that is engaging and personalized to the needs of young learners

Criminal Record Check is required

Thorough working knowledge of the Cowichan culture and community
