Nature and Scope of Work

The Indigenous Education Advisor (IEA) will work within a highly collaborative environment, and liaise with teaching faculty to decolonize the classroom (including virtual “classrooms”). As well, the IEA will facilitate workshops within programs on campus, and others for students and employees which include responsibility for cultural and mentoring activities and supports.

  • Work with the university community to support Indigenous learning by fostering learning and awareness of Indigenous learner needs and approaches.

Illustrative Examples of Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Indigenous Student Success Facilitator(s), Capilano University Counselling Services, and Capilano University faculty to assist with Indigenous-specific supports for Indigenous students.
  • Facilitate workshops and consultations developed through the Centre for Teaching Excellence for faculty to enhance teaching and learning with a specific emphasis on knowledge of Indigenous history, perspectives, ways of knowing, and cultural and pedagogical practices including Land-based learning.
  • Consult with faculty to develop effective strategies for decolonizing and integrating Indigenous ways of knowing into curriculum at both the course and program level.
  • Deliver relevant workshops (for students and community) in collaboration with teaching faculty.
  • Collaborate in the development and delivery of relevant programming.
  • Collaborate with and support the Educational Developer, Indigenous Pedagogies; the Indigenous Education Advisor in the Indigenous Education and Affairs unit, North Vancouver campus; and the Ts’zil Indigenization Facilitator through planned, strategic meetings to discuss systemic issues that require campus-wide supports.
  • Develop and deliver an annual plan of workshops and events, in coordination with the Educational Developer, Indigenous Pedagogies, the Indigenous Education Advisor Indigenous Education and Affairs; and the Ts’zil Indigenization Facilitator.
  • Consult and assist (including schedules) Traditional Knowledge keepers to ensure cultural safety and guide the transmission of Indigenous knowledge at the Sunshine Coast campus.
  • Coordinate the delivery of cultural protocols and practices for campus and course activities.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • A relevant undergraduate degree or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience;
  • Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities;
  • Demonstrated experience in Land-based learning and critical pedagogies of place;
  • Past experience teaching at the post-secondary level as asset
