ELI* Instructor*
Term: September 7, 2021 to November 26, 2021
Hours of Work: To be determined, 15-23 hours/week
Location: English Language Centre and/or remotely, as required
Reporting to the Manager, English Language Institute, the English Language Institute (ELI) Instructor, is responsible for delivering ESL classes to students who are taking English as a Second Language classes and to meet their English language learning needs by fulfilling the key responsibilities of this position.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Delivers lessons that meet the goals of the program
  • Supplements program curriculum to meet student needs in coordination with the Program Coordinator
  • Prepares lesson plans and materials ensuring appropriateness for course
  • Makes use of technology in the classroom as appropriate
  • Makes use of online learning tools and platforms as appropriate
  • Submits a written course outline for each course delivered
  • Conducts informal/formal assessments throughout the term following the assessment schedule in the course outline
  • Reports attendance problems and other student-related issues promptly to the Program Coordinator, Enrolment Services Officer and/or Manager, ELI
  • Keeps a record of student assessments using the method directed by the Program Coordinator
  • Submit Exit/Completion forms, final reports, grade reports and final grades (as appropriate) on the last day of each module at or before 4:30 or as per employment letter
  • Student attendance must be updated regularly and saved using the method directed by the Program Coordinator
  • Follows standardized curriculum and rubrics and supplements when appropriate
  • Encourages a learner-centered approach, ensuring that students are actively engaged in language learning tasks during each lesson
  • Uses appropriate, creative and varied instructional methods to accommodate the learning styles of individual students
  • Addresses students’ needs, interests and concerns. Refers students to the appropriate staff member if needed
  • Designs activities so the students interact with the material, the teacher and each other
  • Provides students with opportunities to develop all the four skills of speaking, reading, writing and listening
  • Creates a positive learning environment by consistently being prepared for class, motivating students to accomplish educational and personal goals and providing opportunities for feedback
  • Fosters an atmosphere of respect and trust in the classroom
  • Is approachable and communicates with students in a fair and consistent manner
  • Manages student behaviour in accordance with MITT and ELI policies
  • Administers institutional placement tests as assigned
  • Assesses writing and speaking components of the placement test based on the rubrics provided as assigned
  • Communicates and collaborates with colleagues and other staff in a respectful manner, in both oral and written communication
  • Shares materials and teaching ideas with colleagues when requested
  • Adheres to a code of professional practice
  • Serves as a role model for students with respect to academic and employability skills
  • Maintains knowledge and expertise in order to deliver up-to-date language training
  • Attends staff meetings
  • Collaborates with other instructors when delivering the same course
  • Chaperones socio-cultural activities as assigned
  • Engages in continuing professional development by participating in in-house PD sessions and external PD opportunities. It is expected that instructors are seeking out opportunities for professional development independently as well as attending assigned PD opportunities.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree
  • TESL certificate from an institution recognized by TESL Canada or Languages Canada
  • Experience in ESL education and/or international language program
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to and a thorough understanding of the needs and issues of international students
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet strict deadlines
  • Demonstrates the ability to manage and have control over a classroom
  • Ability to enforce all school policies, especially as they relate to student honesty and integrity

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Some teaching experience or a successfully completed practicum
  • Experience with adult learners in a post-secondary environment
  • Experience with international students in a post-secondary environment
